I know one thing, Matt Simpson #28 for Conner is one heck of an athlete. Great feet and wheels to burn.

Last week he blew up a Station runningback that was blocking.

I give props to the Cougars, they took the fight to SK and SK was lucky to come out with the win. Conner took advantage of a long snap on the second play of the game and scored shortly after. The second TD was a crazy play, I believe it was 3rd and goal from around the 10 and a deflected pass landed in the hands of a Cougar. SK seems to be getting hit with the injury bug, seems like a bunch of guys are hurting.

My observations:

 

- I overestimated SK's speed. They have a couple guys who can get downfield, but they aren't as fast as I thought

 

- I underestimated Conner's toughness. Their d-line and linebackers brought it tonight - Racke and the SK backs will be sore tomorrow

 

- Conner is faster than last year. It will be interesting to see if they can play at this level in games against Cooper and Ryle, or whether they fall back

 

- Racke, Kincaid, Simpson, Cain - standouts. Flat out great football players

 

- Conner's play calling in the first half was excellent - their QB is a better distributor than last year's - and they were able to open some lanes in the running game

 

- Beulow (sp?) threw some great passes at key times in the second half - that were dropped. Conner had no margin for error in this game and those failure to convert hurt them

 

- SK's d-line dominated in the second half. They forced repeated 3 and outs - if Conner's D hadn't been so stout the game could have gotten away

 

- This was not SK's best performance - but they found the will and made the plays to win. It might serve as the wake-up call to propel them to a new level

 

- Last thought - really feel that SK's coaches made better adjustments starting in the second quarter and carrying into the second half. Defensively they did a much better job winning at the point of attack, and taking away Conner's opportunities downfield, and offensively going tempo and vertical with the back-up QB helped them regain the momentum. The dialed up a screen pass in the 4th quarter that was timed and executed to perfection. It remains to be seen whether they truly have the talent to play for a big school championship - I do believe they have excellent coaching.

Congrats to the Pioneers. Nice to see Matt Shearer getting time at QB. Playing behind Racke has to be difficult but the Coach obviously knows what he is doing by platooning them. Would be interesting if Shearer wouldve stayed at Highlands. I think he could clearly start at QB anywhere in NKY.

I'd agree with your order but probably put SK behind Scott County. SK has a lot of really good players but they weren't together Friday and look bruised.

Conner could have easily won this game with a little better play calling on offense. Conner has a heck of a defense and you could tell that they wore SK down.

 

Same could be said for SK. Bad snap leads to Conner TD, deflected pass, Conner TD. Horse caller call where player had jersey stretched out leads to Conner TD. SK stops Conner on 3rd and long bringing up 4th and 3 and gets a stupid personal foul(not saying unjustified) which changes the game again.

 

SK played sloppy. But they won a game they could've lost and probably should've won by 28+. Just my take. SK looked beat up or uninterested this game. Not sure which it was, hoping for the latter.

 

With that said Conner looked very able. They've got some guys that can do some things. Hell of a game from the Cougars.
