If you were the "average guy" in an Olympic event as a point of reference...

Reading this thread, I'm convinced most don't fully realize how elite ALL Olympians are.

There is a difference between not embarrassing yourself and actually competing with a hope of medaling. Team sports of course are probably going to be a little easier to be able to do this as you aren't alone out there, like soccer and basketball. Now, I can't speak for anyone else, but between 22-28 years of age with 6 months of intense training and practice, I could have taken the basketball court, played a few minutes and not embarrassed myself. But it's not like I was starting from zero either. I had a pretty decent skill set with basketball, size, strength and not off the charts by any means but pretty decent athletic ability. Heck, I would not be afraid to bet that I would not have been the worst player on an Olympic basketball roster.

But you are correct, most of these guys/girls are freaks, most notably IMO the gymnasts. That's a sport that the "average" guy/girl, with the best 6 months of training in the world, even if they are a very good natural athlete, they just have no shot at not embarrassing themselves.

Unless you were a division 1 or 2 level college player you aren't competing in basketball without getting embarrassed IMO. You don't realize how good the bad players are.

I think a while back Brian Scalabrine took on a top 50 CBB recruit and destroyed him. Guy was a scrub NBA player.

:lol2: Yeah, I'm thinking someone has a way too inflated opinion of their skill set.

There are people in almost every event that are in the Olympics right now, that have been doing this their entire lives, that are embarrassing themselves out there. You think you could just up and do it to a level of not embarrassing yourself after 6 months, when these athletes have been doing it for years? Sorry, I'm just not buying it.

If you are just now realizing, after 11 years, that there are a ton of Uncle Rico's on this site then I question your reading comprehension. :bunny:

Ahhh forget it, I had something else typed out, not worth it. I wouldn't have been an embarrassment, I am quite sure of that, I will just leave it at that.

When baseball was an Olympic sport, I could have competed. I played at the D1 level in college, and acutally played on a team with the guy who hit the home run to win the gold medal game in the 2000 Olympics, Mike Neil. We were about equals in high school, although he surpassed me in college.

Honestly, even though i was a good athlete, I don't think 6 months training would be enough time for me or anybody to not look completely like a fool in any other sport that I had just started playing at the Olympic level. Even the olympians that are bad, are still the best in their country. It's foolish to think that unless you were an elite athlete (D2 in college or better), that you could become world class in something in 6 months.

Summer Games...100m.

I've competed on an international level in a winter sport.

I would have to go with shooting or rowing. I had a friend that rowed for Louisville in college and we used to do the row machines at the gym together. She seemed to think I could've rowed in college, unfortunately I didn't even know rowing was a sport in the KY area prior to college.

What is your definition of embarrassment?

If only the Kumite were an Olympic event.

Spoken like someone who, well, doesn't know soccer. :D

You obviously have not seen my soccer resume. More impressive than you think @hoops5

Considering it is 23 and under, I think you would stick out like a sore thumb.

I look good for my age:lol:

I'm trying to think of an event that I could actually complete. I could see my self as the point of reference for the 50m freestyle swim. I wouldn't embarrass myself in the sense that I could actually complete the event by just touching the other wall and people could see how freaking insane these olympic swimmer guys actually are.
