I dont know about all that, but I was just looking through the Twitter feed I posted above and saw this. Had some interesting stuff in it especially the 2014 Reuters poll numbers. I wonder if that number is higher now.

You thinking of moving to Texas, Jesse? Think of how taxes would spike in Texas if it became its own country. (Have to fund a military, come up with a substitute for Social Security, on and on.) Also think about how many companies and talented people would leave the state if the secesh vote succeeded.

Never said I was thinking about moving to Texas, just thought this would make a good thread. On a reverse side, when the taxes do not go to Washington and stay in Texas what would be so hard when you only have to take care of the population of Texas? Dont have to take care of everyone in America right? As far as military, unless there is a foreign attack on the rest of the USA who would they have to worry about immediately? Im sure they would have alot sign up as the soldiers etc. Biggest thing you seem to be missing about whether it be Brexit or Textit is the people dont plan on using the same plan thats being used now. I dont think they like being told by the current leaders what they are going to do or not to do when it goes against the people's wishes or so it seems else the Brexit vote would have been different. As for the exit of good people leaving Texas, I would bet there would be more Americans coming in than going out and a big issue would be to figure out how to control the masses moving there. You like the polls in England, are looking at this wrong. Better start changing your way of thinking or like them the unthinkable could very well happen at some point.

We haven't even touched the infrastructure. Who will foot the bill on the Federal Highways that connect that vast territory? To secede today would be nearly impossible based on the above discussion alone.

 

I know Jesse means well in his argument for a state that can choose to do what it wishes rather than have it mandated by a Federal Government. But left to their own devices the historical record makes me wonder about how it will go for minorities within the Republic.

But a little different. England is/was a sovereign nation that merely separated from the EU. (Similar to leaving an economic UN)

 

Texas is a state out of the 50 leaving the Union of the 50. Usually harbors much more ill will from the mother country.

Texas is going nowhere. Even the republicans in the state senate turn that bogus crap down. I had the displeasure of meeting a few of those Texans wanting to leave the union, not the brightest bunch. I was born in Texas, lived there throughout my life, got family from Texas. Texas and the good ol' US of A are staying with each other, even if it means we drag the crybabies that want to leave the union.

Not true. The polls leading up to the vote all had it too close to call.

As to how Brexit might translate to Texit or another US state seceding, the obstacles are much more significant for a US state seceding.

 

The EU is primarily a free trade zone. It is about economic free market with jurisdiction over some political issues also. All the states in the EU still own their own government structures, which are very diverse; their own entitlement programs; their own infrastructure; etc. Think how all those issues and programs are entertwined in the states in the US and you can see how vastly more difficult it would be for a state to exit the US.
