Who are the Golden State Warriors of Kentucky HSFB?

Featured Replies

Which team in Kentucky history most closely resembled the 2015-2016 Golden State Warriors?

They have to have been the clear favorite to win the title all year, had a dominant regular season followed by a strong run through the playoffs and then... bitter disappointment as they lost in the championship game and were unable to complete the dream season.

A few that come to mind...

In 2011, Mayfield outscored its opposition 401-62 in the regular season and won its regional playoff games by an average score of 54-5. After dispatching Beechwood(who were looking pretty dominant themselves) in the semis, the Cardinals were shocked by Hazard in Bowling Green.

The 2013 Highlands Bluebirds didn't have an unblemished regular season, but their lone loss came at the hands of Cincinnati GCL South power Elder. For what it's worth, Elder only beat Highlands by three and had their season ended in the Ohio D1 playoffs by eventual champ Moeller. That year, Highlands averaged 50 ppg, defeated CovCath twice(including 42-6 in the first meeting) and opened the season with a 30 point blowout of Florida power University Christian. After beating LexCath in the semis, Highlands was stunned by Collins on a last second TD pass by Collins's backup QB. The Bluebird's streak of six consecutive state titles was snapped by a team they throttled 47-0 the previous year. Anyone who saw that one coming was either lying or a die-hard Collins supporter.

In '05, St. X blasted Trinity 48-16 in the regular season and looked primed to finally chase down that 15-0 season that had eluded Mike Glaser. Beatty and the Rocks had other ideas. The inevitable X-T title game rematch materialized and Trinity avenged the regular season loss. A similar scenario played out in 2007 with T avenging a regular season loss to X in the championship game. The '07 Tigers were one of Glaser's most statistically dominant teams, outscoring their first 14 opponents 561-96.

I want to say that Somerset had a team in the late 70's/early 80's that was unbeaten and considered one of the top overall teams in Kentucky before losing in the championship game. Maybe @Jumper_Dad can help me out with that one.

Despite not meeting the full criteria, Danville's '93 squad is worth mentioning. Considered by many to be Danville's best team ever, the Ads were 13-0 and ranked #1 in Kentucky regardless of class before losing to Prestonsburg by a point in OT.

If anyone can think of some other teams that fit the bill, feel free to share.

Outstanding examples provided. Very interesting topic.

I am thinking more high flying attack type teams. Owensboro Catholic from the mid-2000s (lost to Belfry then Russell) comes to mind.

Boone Co 87 team? I believe they were undefeated through the regular season only to be beat by a Shelby Co team they had blown out near the end of the regular season. I think some on here have said that was the best Boone Co team ever and one of the better HS teams of it time.

1980 Ft Campbell Falcons. Having won titles the two previous years and beating Mayfield in their district they lose to a Corbin team that they beat the previous year 26-0. They were ranked third in the state by Litkinhous. Ended the run for he Falcons and Coach Marshall Patterson that had started back in 1976. They would lose to Mayfield in 81 in the district and started a rough stretch until they came back strong in the mid 2000s

I like this thinking.... a finesse team that set statistical records only to lose in the Finals

I am going with the Lone Oak team that lost to Boyle County in OVertime in 2009

Lone Oak was undefeated and had over 6000 offensive yards that year

Boyle was the team most expected to meet them in the Finals, but they were a bit more battle tested with tough wins over LexCath and Bell County to get to the Championship.

The championship went down to the very end, but Boyle prevailed

2007 Lone Oak would fit the bill the best if not for the fact they got destroyed in the Finals by LexCath

That was the team that had Corey Robinson that shattered records with 5872 passing yards. Jamarielle Brown had over 2000 receiving yards making him and Robinson essentially the Splash Brothers equivalent. As I said this is a peerfect comparison as they went 14-0 until the Finals... except for the fact that unlike Golden State they got crushed for the rings.

Good call on Lone Oak, @ATLCat. They were flashy and put up outrageous numbers, but couldn't put it all together on championship weekend.

Some of those memories still hurt to sum....

I'm going to throw in 2010 Hazard team

I know you're trying to replicate the same thread from the basketball forum but wouldn't a better title be New England Patriots instead of a NBA team? Picky I know but it's killing me.

...and in the championship game, Winston Guy was LeBron and pretty much single handedly destroyed the Lone Oak offense. It was brutal.

2014 Male. I still maintain that in 2013, 2014 and 2015 Male had the best team in the state from a strictly talent standpoint and should have won 3 championships rather then just 1 but I digress. In 2014 Male runs the table through the 1st round of the playoffs and are solid favorites to finish a perfect 15-0. Trinity had other ideas and avenged an OT home field loss in the regular season with an OT playoff win at Male on their way to a state championship.

Those E'town teams in the 2000s come to mind.

How they lost to Scott County in 2013 still baffles me.
