Why It's Time to Repeal The 2nd Amendment

Featured Replies

I teach the Constitution for a living. I revere the document when it is used to further social justice and make our country a more inclusive one. I admire the Founders for establishing a representative democracy that has survived for over two centuries.

But sometimes we just have to acknowledge that the Founders and the Constitution are wrong. This is one of those times. We need to say loud and clear: The Second Amendment must be repealed.

As much as we have a culture of reverence for the founding generation, it's important to understand that they got it wrong — and got it wrong often. Unfortunately, in many instances, they enshrined those faults in the Constitution. For instance, most people don't know it now, but under the original document, Mitt Romney would be serving as President Obama's vice president right now because he was the runner-up in the last presidential election. That part of the Constitution was fixed by the Twelfth Amendment, which set up the system we currently have of the president and vice president running for office together.

I don't support this, BUT we are raising a generation in the Wild West who will be making decisions soon. Hard to believe they won't be eyeing the more progressive side of things.

Not going to happen, at least not in out lifetime. A government that gives weapons to cartel hitmen and terrorist is no position to tell it's citizens about whether or not they can carry guns. I would rather keep the 2nd amendment and work on things that can lower the violence. I prefer that than living in a nanny state like the UK, where a politician actually had to pass a bill so people can have options to protect themselves inside their own home.

Changing an Amendment is an almost impossible undertaking, no matter which one it is. Thanks founding fathers.

Texas will succeed from the union before this ever happens.

Wouldn't that just be terrible.

Question to those who immediately and adamantly oppose:

Do you believe the Constitution and its Amendments are still relevant to Today's world, up to the point that they should never be reconsidered?

If that's the case lets get this thing crack-a-lackin'! :lol2:

100% relevant. However, an amendment is a change to the constitution. I will never be dumb enough (I hope) to say that the US government can't change a change or can't be considered. The only additional amendment to the constitution that I can see is adding term limits to congress.

I wouldn't be opposed to limiting magazines to 4 round max. Whatever you're legally allowed to hunt with should be it.

I wouldn't be opposed to getting rid of "assault" weapons. I wouldn't ever buy one, as I don't see a practical use for it.

Otherwise, I like my guns.

It's happened several times before.

Nobody is forcing anyone to live in a country founded with gun rights. If you don't support the constitution you are free to leave whenever you want.

So then your answer to my question in Post#8 would be you don't believe we should ever change anything, correct?

Wouldn't that just be terrible.

Actually it would. Don't know why anyone would think otherwise.
