May 16, 201610 yr Along those same lines, it amazes me how people can act like they are offended by a situation, even when they are not directly involved or are not the "target" of what is allegedly offensive. It seems like PC culture today consist of people are telling other people when they should be offended by something, instead of someone actually be offended. While I do somewhat agree, there are a couple points that I think should be considered. Do you have to be the "target" in order to recognize that something isn't quite right? Should you ignore something just because you aren't directly affected?? Is it wrong to provide support and understanding to "target" even if you aren't part of the target??

No, but at the same time, I am not going to act like I am outraged over something when the person who is supposed to be offended couldn't care less. I have seen talking heads on all news stations tell people that they should be offended by something that someone said, and it just strikes me as odd. If you have to be told that you should be offended, then you are either A) to dumb to realize it yourself or B) you're not actually offended.

May 16, 201610 yr There's a lot of baggage to unpack. What some people consider being "politically correct" is simply being polite or treating people with dignity. I don't see anything wrong with this and most of us adhere to it whether we admit it or not. That some people believe we would be better off if we were more insulting is bizarre. Some people consider being "politically correct" to be a social stigma against "telling it like it is." In my experience I don't think there is any problem for someone to "tell it like it is" as long as they can back it up. Instead, "telling it like it is" tends to be more like what I described above and is just meant to be insulting. There are probably some extreme cases of obtusely-worded phrases being used that can rightly be made fun of. There are also attempts to shut down certain opinions (like a speaker being drowned out by protesters), but this seems to be a different thing altogether. I absolutely agree with that. But if I don't agree with what someone says that doesn't mean I'm "offended" or being "PC." This and this. Habib for the win!!!!!!
May 16, 201610 yr To be honest I didn't know political correctness even existed anymore. I sure don't see it.
May 16, 201610 yr OMG Yes it's bad. Holiday cards over Christmas cards. That's one example. See, I don't view this as PC. There are still plenty of cards labeled specifically as Christmas cards. To me, this is just an example of people recognizing that the US is a diverse nation, made up of many races and religions. Not everybody celebrates Christmas. What's so bad about recognizing the holiday's that other folks celebrate that are special and holy? Should stores not sell Chanukah merchandise??

Cause there's ferners that ain't like ussuns. And some ain't even ferners - they just look and act different that regular Americans. D. No. In all seriousness, as long as it isn't shoved down our throats - and I'm personally not seeing evidence of that in this case - no big deal. Some folks on both sides of every fence are going to get worked up.
May 16, 201610 yr I guess a question that needs to be asked is what is political correctness exactly? Like others have said good manners are just good manners, but is that pc? Is it called politcal correctness for a reason? Is it just a way to say that political figures should act in a certain way?
May 16, 201610 yr Political correctness is bad when it is taken to extremes, which in today's society seems every time you turn around. It seems many are feigning outrage at things that don't affect them or feigning support at things that don't affect them. I was raised to be polite and treat all people equally and with respect. That doesn't mean I have to agree with everyone and it doesn't make me wrong or them right when I do, or visa versa.

May 16, 201610 yr I consider myself a very polite person, but at the same time I also consider myself politically incorrect. I address adults as ma'am and sir, Mr. and Mrs. I say please and thank you. I also refer to illegal aliens and criminals, not undocumented residents or justice involved individuals. Fort Hood was terrorism not workplace violence. And for the record I do believe that political correctness is bad for America.
