Privates / Independents don't want to be separate because it's better for them if they are in with people that largely can't compete with them. Publics want to be separate because it's best for them to be playing against teams that, for the most part, abide within the same restrictions they do. I'm sure if I coached / played at a private / independent I wouldn't want to be separate either; in the short term it makes it harder to win, and in the long term, it likely decreases the appeal of playing at these schools.

 

How would separating make it 'harder to win' for Trinity? They would keep playing St. X and you would remove Male, making it easier. Bowling Green would probably beat them every now and again, but I doubt it would be as often as Male.

They shouldn't be separated because each school deserves a chance to prove itself the best. They all abide by the same rules of the KHSAA so if any school chooses to restrict themselves further that is their business.

 

If you can honestly look the stat that privates and independents have won 2/3 of all championships since 2010 and not think these schools are at an obvious advantage, I think it's likely that your allegiance to Trinity is blinding you to the truth. Privates and independents should want to play schools that have their built in advantages and not feast on county schools that in the vast majority of cases have almost no chance to beat them, but clearly they do not.

 

I look at that stat and see schools that have built their programs through hard work and dedication regardless of whether they are county, independent, or private. Most of the county wins are also programs that have proven themselves and built a winning tradition like Belfry or Central.

 

The truth is that it's easier to blame the other team for being 'too good' than to improve your team. It's easier to sit at the bottom and say there's 'almost no chance' than to put in the effort required to reach the top.

Ability to allow non district students to attend without having to pay super high tuition (5k @ highlands as opposed to 13k at Trinity). Independents really have it better than privates. If there were a 6a independent school in a metropolitan area, I suspect they would do very well (in some ways Male acts as an independent)

 

Can't the same thing happen at any public school?? Unless they have locked down open enrollment...which is only a very small percentage.

The sarcasm is because this is an argument that has been beaten to death on this forum so many times since 2005 it is absurd. Shoot many of the more prominent BGPers who have been here since then have gotten to the point where they don't even weigh in on this anymore because of all the times it has come up again....and again.... and again.....and again. Each time it comes down to schools wanting to implement their will on others who do not choose to constrain themselves.

 

That said, so you have no problem with a 7 team class? Why don't we just split along rural/metro lines, honestly this is more of the issue. Rural schools don't really have a chance to attract anyone since their populations are largely negligible. If you have a large metro area with open enrollment how is that any different from an independent school or a private school? Let's go ahead and just make this what it is, split it along the lines of Non T and X and T and X and go with a 2 team class to distill it down to the real issue that many have.

So here's the list of independent schools in NKy. 2 have had any kind of sustained success.

Beechwood

Bellevue

Dayton

Ludlow

Lloyd

Holmes

Walton Verona

Newport

Silver grove

 

 

And typically you don't see 6a independent schools because they are mostly set in small towns. But again, a kid can pay tuition to go to just about any school they want. There is no separation of public schools. All live by the same rules.

Big Private: X, T, Cov Cath, Lex Cath (add BG, Highlands, Owensboro as independents if you want)

So we are now gonna exclude Male and Manual because their program offerings resemble independents? Might as well go back to Louisville city championship then because all JCPS schools have the same advantage/ disadvantage over each other. Basically the school administration dictates whether the school has athletic success.
