No matter where the championships are held, some area of Kentucky would have an issue about the length of drive. Ky could go to multiple championship sites but that would be a nightmare and probably not possible. To be honest, if my son or daughter's team ended up in a state championship game, I'd drive to Kentucky Bend road area surrounded by the Mississippi River if that was where I had to go. In my opinion you do what it takes to get behind your kid and root him/her on, simple as that and the venue doesn't matter.

Sunday games are just bad for those kids that go to church. What about those kids that their parents won't let them miss church to play ball? They will work hard all year and not be allowed to play.

 

I've never been to Bowling Green, but I'm guessing there are at least several churches of several denominations in the area, all of which likely have morning services that won't interfere with the game if it is played in the afternoon. In 20 years of coaching, I've never had a kid miss a game because of Church on Sunday morning.

Location, Location, Location... WKU may have a great venue, but has a terrible location for most of the state. UK may have a "too large venue", but has a great location. People are not going to travel to a great venue in a bad location. However, they will travel to a "too large venue", in a great location.

 

The KHSAA has a short sighted vision of $$$. Instead of thinking of the potential money they could make in the long term, the take the easy money and could care less about anything else. They can do all the 'attendance studies' they want, but the only thing they really need to study is the mirror. They need to provide affordable tickets in a centralized location.

 

The fact is the new Red Book policies ruined the cash cow of the KHSAA, which was coaches and school administrators buying tickets with school funds. They feed off the schools to no end. Heck, the KHSAA sends out district, region, semi-state and State champion trophies to the schools and sends the bill along with it. They don't even pay for the trophies.

The town you're looking for here is Lebanon, not too far from Elizabethtown, as the most central part of the state.

My personal opinion is that the championship venue should rotate to different sites on a 4 or 5 year basis. Have it in BG for 4 years, then Lexington for 4 years, then Louisville for 4 year and a location in the SE part of the state for 4 year and continue to rotate. But that requires someone or some corporate sponsorship. WKU was the only one (correct me if I'm wrong) that submitted a bid the last application period. That's why it will be there until 2018. We shall see if anyone else comes up with a competing bid this next cycle.

This is what I mean by short sighted. If ticket sales provide revenue and people do not come, then it could be better to take less of a financial package upfront for a better location and more revenue from ticket sales.

 

If nobody else bid, then it was an easy decision for the KHSAA. I do not know the financials, what I do know is the KHSAA has an attendance problem.
