Dragonfire: Has any Board of Ed staff admitted that they messed up when they drew the lines for South Warren? I always said the reason they tried so hard to take the county kids out of BG schools was for sporting reasons. It was their final (failed) attempt to try to fix their own mess up.

 

Add that to the deteriation of the morgantown road area and you have a lack of kids that play American football. Hard to believe we are talking about WCHS

......we'd be hard pressed to find ten, heck, maybe not even that many schedules in the state that are tougher...especially classes 1-5; and, I don't think there is much, if any, difference in it for the 17-18 cycle.

My initial reaction was to say HECK NO they've never admitted it. I will be charitable and say that if they've ever done it publicly, I've yet to see it. I maintain that they got exactly what they wanted - a strong South Warren. I'm not saying they desired Warren Central to be burned to the ground, but they showed an utter lack of caring in the face of being told exactly what would happen. Everything they were warned would happen came to pass.

 

It is possible that they attempted to kneecap Bowling Green to help correct it, but we'll never know. I believe the only way it would have benefited Central would have been if once the former Bowling Green non-resident students were trapped, they redraw the lines to push students to Central. Otherwise, they'd have never had room to take back those students.

 

The joke remains that in trying to build a super school to compete with Bowling Green (and later in trying to cripple them by other means), they have given rise to the most dominant era in Purple history. Never before had they won a football, basketball, and baseball title in the same year. Add in soccer, and they swept the big four. I mean, that's an incredible achievement, greatly assisted by the diminishing of their primary rivals in three of those sports (Central in football and basketball, Greenwood in soccer).

 

The deterioration of Morgantown Road is a significant factor for which I do not blame the county school leadership. There's nothing they could do about that. I've mentioned up thread that the change in demographics is a significant reason for the number drop, and that's just something that naturally occurred. I wish the city and county would do more to raise up the area, but it is what it is. It's just another reason why forethought was needed when drawing the lines - they removed one of the higher income areas of the district, full of high achievers.

 

The county leadership has proven themselves time and again to be utterly incapable of planning for the future and using foresight. Unfortunately, Central's leaders recently have made the same type of mistakes. They needed to be flawless to compensate - they weren't. Yes, this is Warren Central, a proud school and tradition dating back to Warren County High in 1950, utterly decimated.

Adding insult to injury, they just dropped a bucket of money with a new field which makes sense to some but not to me. I bet you a wooden nickel that there will be consideration of relocating the entire school to another area of town in the future. No way the board of ed would turn down $ from Houchens or WKU if an offer was made. Not sure how or where they would relocate but they would be hard pressed not to entertain the thought

I agree that they will and should bouid new school I think it will be in richardsville area and be a small school with students in city limits go to BG and county kids to South

The talk of tearing down Central and building a new school is comical. Their football team is down. That's about it.

 

Baseball, while not great, did beat Greenwood to advance in the District Tourney

Boys Basketball lost by 3 in the Regional Championship

Boys Soccer was 13-6 in a BRUTAL District

Softball, well, softball has never been their strong point.

Girls Basketball was respectable at 13-17, a much better year than many they've had in the past!

Girls Soccer was 17-5

Volleyball was 14-19

 

While none of this sets the world on fire, they are a far cry from this decimated scorched earth that they're being painted as. They still have 1,018 students at last accurate count. Have you seen the school? It's a very nice looking facility now, and a far cry from what it looked like in the "glory years" when it looked like a prison.

 

I think we get too caught up in the "now" of the situation. If they're still down in 5 years, then I'd say you can claim that "they're done". But for anyone with a memory, Central went through a very similar change back in the mid and late 90's when the effect of Greenwood which opened in 1990 took a-hold of them.

 

...and dear South folks. The honeymoon of everyone wanting to go to the "new" school doesn't last forever. Just ask Collins High School. That, and in a year, the Spartans get to experience what the Dragons have had to deal with for all those years when they were very good.
