Not surprised I heard he was leaving last fall

Then he sure worked his tail off for someone that was out the door. :idunno:

Which is to say, he of course didn't decide to leave himself.

This is a cowardly move. Check out how the principle left his last school

They must have a buddy they already want & the whole thing stinks

I'm not a WC fan at all but

Know the coach & people involved.

*Warren Central's Seniors will play for their 4th head coach in 4 seasons in 2016.

*In 20 seasons, this will be WC's 7th head coach. In those same 20 years, Warren East has had 7 coaches, Greenwood has had 4, Bowling Green has had 1.

Some places create an environment of change, some foster a culture of stability.

I guess Dragonfire can confirm the following

Stephens is out (3 coaches in 3 years)

Spring Practices only has 21 players showing up. If this is true, it is a shame.

Im a huge Purples fan but to see this happening at Dragon Land is terrible.

The problem to me is this:

Do you let your son play on a team with only 20 other kids? Injuries during season, then what?

Redistrict wont help anytime soon. Would you want your child to be forced to switch schools halfway through their high school years?

The mistake that occurred several years ago of the "changing of the lines" when South Warren came to town has now caught up with them.

Huge problem.

If the number 21 is correct, i hope its not, could it be possible that WCHS not even field a varsity team this year?

The just put all that money into the stadium too, what a shame.

I was told not two weeks ago that they expected 55 if everyone stuck it out. Yesterday when I got the call, I was told that there were 49 lockers with name plates on them. So based on those, 21 doesn't sound correct. If it was that low, it wasn't shared with me, and I asked directly two weeks ago about the numbers. At that point I was told "recruiting the halls like crazy".

If they were that low, can it be believed that it was Clay that was to blame? The numbers were trending downward for the last decade. The makeup of the school was changing even before the redistricting, but was kicked into high gear thanks to that. Transfers have taken more than their fair share as well. Could you really blame the head coach when he took over a team that had 35 players last year and graduated half? When the incoming freshmen couldn't even field an 8th grade team on their own this season? You have to give someone TIME to change things, especially when so much is broken, much of it by factors beyond your control. Getting rid of coaches after a single season is almost never the answer, and it is NEVER the answer for on the field product. You cannot objectively evaluate a coach based on a single season. Said coach better have done something egregiously bad to be canned after a single year. I've yet to hear any evidence of that happening here.

I am disgusted - DISGUSTED - by what has happened in the last five years to Warren Central. The majority is the fault of the county leadership. They crippled the school with their policies and the representation on the school board is a joke. The board member that should be advocating for Warren Central sent his son to South Warren and by and large voted with South in mind. County leadership has seen fit to replace the last two Warren Central principals after a mere two years, introducing further instability. All that said, Warren Central has done damage all on their own with some of their decision making. Poor hires that necessitate quick termination are mistakes that cannot be afforded. As Bear3 notes, some environments encourage stability. A strong program requires it. Right now boys basketball is about the only one that has had stability of late, as there has been near constant turnover in many other sports for one reason or another.

Above all else, no matter what was in play, if Clay Stephens didn't do something that warranted termination for something other than program performance, this was an unforgivable mistake. You don't terminate a coach in MAY. You don't terminate two coaches in a row after a single year (even if you officially call it a resignation). It's program suicide.

I agree Dragonfire. They have a handful of significant problems and none of those problems has been dealt with correctly.

I did hear the number 21. Hope im wrong. From a Purples fan; good luck. I hope things get turned around somehow.

Main issue to me is getting kids that have already began high school years at South to switch to Central. Not going to happen.

I think the problems at Morgantown road may take a decade to recover. Wow!

I saw the number 21 at spring practice being spoken about on Facebook. This whole situation is shocking.

Dragonfire listed numerous reasons for the downfall of WC. All of which, are correct. But back to numbers. This will be their 4th coach in 4 years. What kid wants to come out and put their heart and soul into a program that has zero stability. I have heard NOTHING but great things about Coach Stephens and what he was trying to build at WC. He's well respected amongst other coaches and seems to have the best interests of WC and his players at heart. I have no clue what is going on over there and it's very difficult to watch.

The article in the Daily News shows what kind of person he is. He definitely took the high road. If nothing else, he could have just said no comment. My hot head probably would have said much more.

Has the job been posted yet?

If it's posted today , May 9 and it's open 30 Days ( as hiring rules say) then new coach can be hired June 9

So what "established coach" would leave his current team for a job with such low #'s as has been stated? How is this a good thing for the football program @ WC?

This principal who has done this is IGNORANT of how things work and lacks any real leadership skills. Keep your head up coach. If your 8th grade team has less than 11 kids 2 years running then simple math says your roster is going to be small and in trouble.

Fair point, but one person has told me this firing came from Central Office. In other words the Principal was told to fire him.

Doesn't surprise. Same comment goes for that person then.
