I think he's wondering why you keep saying "on my six" instead of behind me. :lol2: :idunno:

Never heard anyone say that before, but from the context I assumed that's what it meant.

You missed the point. I have no idea if gramps was willing to shoot. The point was that this other guy did absolutely nothing where a reasonable person could say..."he deserved to get shot." I am not saying he did or did not creep up on plantman' date=' wasn't there, but even in the most extreme interpretation of events as they were described...shooting that guy would not have been a reasonable reaction. And so...if shooting him would not have been a reasonable action...then drawing on him and pointing the weapon at him was not reasonable. The point is not that one has to fire if they pull the gun, but the point is that if the circumstances don't warrant firing the gun, then they don't warrant pulling it out. Even JA says he would not have pulled his gun in this situation, so I can't be too far off in my criticism.[/quote']

Most of us teach that you only pull to shoot. This guy did not show me that he had the intentions, ability and opportunity to kill or seriously hurt Plant. You are going to have prove all 3 of those subjects, in a court of law, if you shoot somebody to keep your freedom, money and sanity.

Me and JA appear to be agreeing. Folks might want to get ready for some sort of apocalypse or something.

Unless he's a cop or military I can only think of one type of person who says it.

Bingo.

Haha you're a smart person and I'm a smart gun owner.

You could have turned the gas nozzle into a flamethrower if you carried a lighter.

@plantmanky, next time, just show them that green thing...they'll run.

My neighbor travels 50,000 miles a year. He carries. just last night some guy thought he cut him off, laid on the horn, laid on the finger. Guy gets aggressive and pulls in from of my buddy and does the break job. They end up on in the traffic jam, the young guy is in front. Stops, gets out of his car and starts to approach my buddies car. My buddy still not sure why this guy is so hot. Grabs his gun, places it on his chest so the kid can see it. Kid stops, gets in his car, heads to the right lane as fast as traffic would let him. Got off the first exit. I'm guessing he needed to go clean himself.

New world we live in. Bad guys will be bad guys and do bad things.. OK to be prepared for one of them.

By not being there you are just assuming a lot. You are correct in that one does not pull out a gun unless they are willing to use it. But one pulls the gun in hopes in avoiding a situation, thereby avoiding not using the gun. It may be too late to help someone if you wait until an attacks actually takes place.

I am assuming less than you. The way it is described, I don't think pulling a gun and pointing at that guy (and everyone behind him, b/c are you not supposed to be also concerned with line of fire?) was justified. Not in any sense. So you can't pull a gun when it is not justified on the assumption that it might become justified. Did you fall for the ole' snipe hunt trick ever?

And you are also assuming, just for the purpose of arguing I guess, that I am thinking "you wait until an attack actually takes place." Not at all what I would do. I would start by looking at the guy and asking him something, like "how you doing" or "can I help you?" Checking body posture, movements, possible weapons, etc. And it goes on from there, a series of assessments about the situation.

Just imagine if you were in plantman's situation. And the cops drive by at that exact time. They would probably arrest the old man with the gun actually, or at least question him pretty good.

You gotta have a reason to pull a gun on someone. And thinking that you might stop a reason from occurring is not good enough. Cause then you are just pulling a gun on people. In most situations. If Hannibal Lectre invites you over for supper, fine, then you can pull a gun on him.

My hand would be on my gun as I ask those questions. You may only have a second or two to respond. If you get the right responses, you can leave the gun holstered.

Why not even try to verbally warn the person? Why do you think we hear cops shout commands at people in public? Skipping right to the gun is a recipe for disaster.

We have no clue what this guys intentions were and we have no clue if he was in the mental/physical state to fight, or be able to aim a gun, which he more than likely didn't have.

Sure he had the opportunity to hurt Plant because he was near him, but it's not enough reason to skin a smoke wagon. This isn't the Wild Wild West.

Honestly didnt have a chance to feel threatened myself. Like I said, I didnt even know the guy was behind me. I looked up saw grandpa with his gun not pointed at me, turned around and saw the guy, who then walked away.

Must not have been too buzzed, that sounds like a cover for his true motive, he sure quickly got the point that whatever he had in mind to do, the older man was having none of it. Quick response to walk away.

I'm just glad to finally know what "on my six' means. Had no clue.
