I don't see the Browns wasting a 1st round pick on another qb.

He's expected to go round 3 or 4 this year.

This move by Cleveland makes perfect sense. They are weak in the QB room. Adding a QB for small dollars is a win-win. Thirty-seven yr old Josh McCown was their starter last year. He played 8 games. He will get hurt again. If he gets helicoptered in the first game and is carried off the field like happened in the season opener last year who are they going to put in? a rookie?! Hardly the ideal situation. Their backups are not very talented either. So adding RG3 just gave them more depth in the QB room. They wanted Kaepernick but he wouldn't re-work his salary enough for them to think it worth trading for him so they went with their only other option at FA QBs.

 

No matter what RG3 thinks, he is not their future QB. Cleveland will draft a QB in this draft at #2. RG3 will play until that guy is ready. Then they sit RG3 and play the draft pick. Will it be in 2016 or 2017? Don't know. But RG3 only received a two year deal. They needed someone to hold the position while the new guy develops. They got him. I think they keep McCown if McCown doesn't raise a stink to be traded or released. McCown will mentor the draft pick. I doubt RG3 is willing to do that cause he is young and wants to be a starter in the NFL. McCown knows his days are numbered and he is willing to mentor other qbs.

If Hugh can't make him serviceable then RG is done.

He will be the 25th starting QB in Cleveland since 1999.

I can't imagine Cleveland fans being happy with this signing.

I talked this through with a couple of other NFL folks I run with from outside BGP and if I were in your shoes (meaning a Browns fan 1st) I would be looking at the positives too. But I can tell you that the guys I talked to agree with me, we are happy as Bengals fans that the Browns signed RG3.

On another note I mentioned above, I fear that RG3 could be bringing character baggage with him and John Elway and the Broncos think the same thing:

 

The Browns landed quarterback Robert Griffin III in part because no one else wanted him. Specifically, because the Broncos didn’t want him.

 

Griffin definitely was interested in the Broncos; he grew up a fan of the team. The problem for Griffin is that the coach and G.M. of the Broncos have ties that are too close to Griffin’s first coach in the NFL.

 

As explained by Mike Klis of 9News.com, the Broncos considered Griffin but ultimately opted not to pursue him.

 

“[A]fter making a few phone calls, Elway was concerned about Griffin’s character,” Klis writes. “Elway never did express interest in the former Washington quarterback who was the NFL’s Rookie of the Year in 2012 but had several fallouts with Coach Mike Shanahan, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and teammates.”

 

While Klis never makes the express connection between Elway, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, and Mike Shanahan, that link doesn’t need to made for a Denver audience. Broncos fans know that Elway was the quarterback, Kubiak was the coordinator, and Shanahan was the coach for the team’s back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998.

 

Clearly, Elway and Kubiak spoke to Shanahan. Even more clearly, Shanahan had things to say about Griffin that kept the Broncos from even doing an independent tire kicking by bringing Griffin in for a visit.

 

Whether they made the right call will depend in large part on how Griffin performs for Cleveland — and how whoever becomes the quarterback in Denver performs in 2016.

Because I was afraid he was going to end up in LA. Which IMO would put the Rams 2 or 3 years down the road before they either trade for, sign or draft a quality QB.

 

RG3 may do fine, but seeing what he's done so far I didn't want the Rams to waste time on him.
