Attendance down for 1st round

There are multiple venues around the state suitable for hosting. EMBRACING the girls Sweet 16 is what needs to be the crux of where it is played. WKU certainly did that, but now NKU is getting its shot. The point is that is was not broken in Bowling Green and did not need a fix, but that is spilt milk. If NKU is not a significantly better, and they need a fair chance to prove it, the KHSAA has egg on is face and a screwed it up royally. Bottom line is the girls' Sweet 16 is a great event that is worthy of top-notch promotion. Again, community/region embracement is the key factor as to where it should be.

I agree with this! It's more than just the arena!

Big mistake moving the bracket around to have local teams play at night. A better move would have been to move the local teams to playing during the day. This was shown yesterday when the local schools played during the day and schools let out to watch the games, nice student sections. Did you see Campbell Co student section, there's a reason the first round game student section was about a 1/3 of yesterday's. Second highest attendance in history I was told. Kids will miss school to go to a game, they will not miss hanging out at night to go to a game. I hope the KHSAA learns from it experiment and realizes to not put the local teams at night but during the day.

Campbell County schools were closed yesterday, they didn't have to attend the game to miss school.

I haven't been to any girls sweet 16's I at WKU/Bowling Green, but have been to 5 of the last 6 boys state football championships. I never recalled seeing or hearing any so called embracing the games.

People go to the games from all over the state to see their teams play.

Seems to me that people from the western side are not as interested in seeing their teams play when they have to travel as people from the rest of the state.

Yes, and they played during the day not much to do, high attendance, night time different story. Put the locals during the day. Numbers Don't lie. Or don't complain about low attendance is all I'm saying. Largest crowds at Wku were when those big co schools that are close to Wku played during the day. You would think people could figure this out if they really cared about attendance. IMO.

Actually, if they played at night there probably would have been more people in general there for Campbell Co. Someone donated 350 student tickets to the high school so this helped out with the student population but people wanted to come and support the girls and they did.

Golly, we have known for sometime that the Enquirer is not interested in covering NKy high school sports. But neglecting the Ky Girls Sweet Sixteen is nearly abusive and destructive to the entire Greater Cincinnati's image of being good hosts of a variety of economic development events. Chamber of Commerce, Tri-Ad, NKU, City of Highland Heights, the entire NKy business community, and Greater Cinti in general have taken a major image hit and the Enquirer needs to hear loud and clear they did not perform to the standards expected in a major metropolitan area. Embarrassing? You bet!

Great points. The Enquirer does not even cover high school sports period with reporters, they use "contributors" as the alternative. They got rid of Mike Dyer a few months ago because of more salary cutbacks. Now all they use are a group of stringers to cover the most popular part of the sports in this area. Yes, the Bengals are very good and get coverage. Same for Xavier. But who really cares about UC football? Or UC basketball for that matter. Yet the Enquirer covers these teams with real reporters. The Reds are awful, but they are a MLB team in theory.

The Enquirer is a miserable publication, the latest evidence being the non-coverage of the girls Sweet 16 8 miles across the river.

For anyone keeping score at home......

Friday afternoon attendance 6056

Friday evening attendance 2910

First off, so people care about Xavier and not UC? Ha

I think tonight's games attendance is poor for a lot of reasons. Kids are going to go to a girls basketball game over other weekend plans. Stinks but it is how it is. I think putting the local schools at night is smart because you will not get the same size crowd from an out of town team at night as during the day.

Second why are the games played so late? Who from Louisville or Murray is going to be able to drive home after the game. They should be earlier.

As far as ticket prices for the sessions besides tomorrow you get 2 games. So technically the price makes sense.

You are correct. Football and boys get an automatic following just because they are football and boys. Geez, I hate saying that, but it is what it is. There is really not much in common between girls' b-ball and boys' football.

Semis attendance was 3759

And they were good games.

Semis attendance was 3759

I estimated about 1/3 capacity, so that sounds about right. With the Murray fans leaving, it really hurts the Sunday crowd.

In reality Campbell Co winning the 10th was likely the best possible team for attendance. Holmes winning the 9th quite possibly was the worst team for attendance that could have won the 9th. Sorry that is just reality not picking on Holmes. I'm fairly certain Ryle or Highlands or just about any other team in the 9th would have drawn more. But kudos to those that did come support Holmes.

Next year could be different. Maybe a team from the 9th or 10th goes deeper than Friday. Maybe they both lose in the first round.
