Male 68 Highlands 52 (Scrimmage)

Perhaps we should allow at least 1 regular season game to be played before "The King of the Backs" is declared.;)

You know what, I don't think too many people will agree with you on that. This young man is the real deal. HHS will get to see the other back that is one of the top Mr. Football candidates in Victor Andeson from X in week four. We'll let you know which one is better. I hope I saw the better one tonight, no offense, because if there is a better one, watchout!!!! :scared: I would have to say there won't be anyone in titletown even close. But then again that's just me talking after watching an unbelievable performance tonight against an awefully good football team.

My question is did either team line up a defense?

WOWZA!!!! That's a lot of points even though it's only a scrimmage and you can't gage what a real score would have been! Beumont is the real deal and has been for awhile! He, Anderson from X and Isreal from Lex Cath could be the top 3 backs in the state and Highlands could see them all this year!

The Birds showed us lots spirit. They will be fun to watch and I loved their speed at QB and #23. Smaller in the line than us, but fought hard all nite. Love to see them at PaPa Johns. Good Luck this year.

I guess your name really fits you???:D :D

That was an interesting game.

Beaumont is as stated: very, very good. I heard he had 380 all purpose yards IN THE FIRST HALF. Hobbs (no.11) and the qb don't run the ball too shabbily either. But there is no doubt whose going to haul the water for Redmon this year. But Male's qb threw some very nice passes and teams that focus only on Beaumont are going to be in trouble. He threw about a 45 yd td pass on the run while being heavily chased and it was a perfectly thrown ball. Would have had more completions but for some dropped balls. They still love getting the screen pass and quick pass in the flats to Beaumont. Male d was the same as always: on the line and in your face. Tough to run outside because of their alignment. Gave up big yds and big plays up the middle though. Pass defense was very solid. I really like this Male team.

Highlands d. had some real problems adjusting to Male's speed in the first half. Hope this doesn't offend the Beechwood fans, but last week's scrimmage didn't prepare Highlands at all for what they had to deal with last night speed wise. Tackling, as mentioned by someone above, needs to be worked on, although it did improve considerably after half. I think a lot of the improved tackling came from adjusting to the Male speed. Truth is a lot of "bad tackling" is caused by the runner being faster and quicker than the tackler and we saw that last night. We also did a much better job covering the screen in the second half. We've got some work to do on sticking to defensive assignments and not freelancing particularly when the offensive play is breaking down. On several pass plays as their qb was scrambling we broke down on our pass rush lane assignments or our coverage responsibilities and they burned us. Work on those areas and I think we are going to have a pretty good d inspite of the points allowed.

Offense was okay. Cecil ran the ball extremely well particularly on the qb draws. Threw some nice passes also. Screen passes to Conner and Stine worked very well with good down field blocking. Had one screeen for a td called back or else the Birds' score would have been higher. I thought the o line did a good job pass protecting.

Special teams looked really good at times. Got some work to do though. Conner looked good returning kick offs. By the way, did Beaumont look amazing on that attempted punt that turned into a 3 yd pass to him which he then ran for about a 80 td? I think it might have been Highlands first defensive stop of the game, forcing them to punt. Bad snap to punter, he scrambles, eludes a rusher, as he is about to be tackled, throws a little pass in the flat to Beaumont who is acting as a safety valve. Rest was poetry in motion for about 80 yds. Because of a bad snap on the punt, instead of the Birds getting the ball, Male ends up with a td. Dang it Bobby, work on your long snappers!

I've got a feeling that when the Birds are in their film session today, they'll hear they did a lot of things well and a lot of things not so well. Got a week to get some kinks worked out.

Birds showed a whole lot of heart and didn't quit after being blitzkrieged in the first quarter. Kept their cool; kept their composure and kept fighting back and outscored Male in the second half (starters played the whole game). Birds looked well conditioned. All in all, not a bad game for the Birds considering three starters (Head, Koop and Kramer) did not play. All three's contributions would have helped, particularly Kramer. He's our "Beaumont" and I'd love to have seen what we would have done with him in there.

Good luck Bulldogs and hope you all have a great season. I understand Dixie has looked really good in their scrimmages, so Friday night could be another doozy of a game for the Birds.

That's a looot of points for a scrimmage.

Nice post LN.:thumb: :thumb:

I didn't see Spencer Head last night??? Injured? I thought HHS played alot of "base" defense in the first half..then in the second half went more to a stunting mode. Was REALLY surprised at how many sophomores were rotated in on the #1 D. Heard the voice of old coach Bob Berta preaching "DGBD!! Don't get beat deep!" This will get corrected. Sparky Draper looked good at his new position...kind of a embryonic Collinsworth lookin' receiver. LOVED the medium depth routes in the passing game. Small throw = big yardage. A LOT of GOOD THINGS happened out there.

Joe Fitzgerald played large on defense. Dale has a lot on both sides of th ball this year.

I loved the screens. The whole O line was out infront of the one that got called back. The line is very mobile for their size. I only saw the 1st quarter, did HHS rotate any of the O line in on D line? If they don,t some Sophs will see meaningful minutes. Wienrich likes to keep his guys fresh, lots of rotation on D line and lb. I heard Head had a shoulder injury, hopefully nothing serious. His speed would have helped last night.

Those screen couldn't have been drawn up any better!! Reminded me of "the wall" that you see on punt returns. Those will definitely open up some running room up the middle. Thought Cecil really did a nice job running and running the O. Boy..a SR. line do make a difference!! And Kudos out to the Roller boy moving out to tackle. Undersized but "over-heart" !! Did an admiral job against MUCH bigger boys. And the Hempfling boy played each tackle / guard slot. Nice versatility to go along with good size!! Guard to center, led by Lil' Sarge, were opening up some nice inside holes. Like I said previously...A LOT of GOOD was going on out there last night...along with some valuable lessons taught by an excellent opponent!

Will any other team in the state score 52 points on Male this season. No way!

In defense of the DB's and the long passes completed...the toughest thing in the world to defend is the broken play. And Male's QB was an excellent scrambler/runner....at least 2 of the long TD's were improvision on the QB's part.

So after jumping out 41-12, the Birds outscored the Dawgs 40-27 which isnt bad.

Any JV play in that 40-27? I heard others say JV to JV that Highlands outscored Male 2 TDs to none.

No. The JV and frosh played before the varsity game, in a split field, 10 play format. It was in that format the Highlands JV outscored Male 2 tds to none. Once the varsity game began, if was varsity the whole time.
