You know what is backwards? Taylor County's student section this week had signs that combined to show "X > NKU". While their TEAM was in the state tournament, playing in a state tournament game, mind you.

 

Based on what I saw and heard this week, voters got it 100% correct. I'm not going to bash on high school kids on this forum, so I wont say anymore.

People get too caught up in all the other garbage that comes with Mr Basketball and the voting process. Definitely flawed and I think it should be done after the Sweet 16 so voters can get one last look at the candidates still playing on the biggest stage.

 

IMO this should have been a two horse race between Weyer and Goodin if the award is supposed to go to the most skilled/talented player that the state has to offer.

 

As far as Goodin goes, the fact that voters would let their dislike of a coach and program take an award away from a KID is flat out ridiculous. I really feel for him and I have no problem with him making any comments that he made.

Just curious PP92, since you've been there for the games, if there was a "Mr. Teammate" award, who gets it, Weyer or Goodin?

 

I think both have been great teammates in the tournament. They are both being asked to do a lot for their team's success and I like what I have seen from both of them. They both put up stats in 3+ categories. I love stat stuffers.

Carson Williams was voted as Mr. Basketball. Stop trying to rob the honor from the kid. The vote is over and the coaches and media chose who they wanted. You can sit and say someone else deserved it more, Carson didn't deserve it, if this had happened..., if that had happened..., etc and it wouldn't change anything.

How did I bash him? I simply said IN MY OPINION he isn't the best basketball player in the state. I didn't criticize him, his game, his flaws, or anything else I've seen associated with Goodin and Weyer in other threads.

 

I'm not trying to rob him of anything. My uncle coached him in AAU ball so I've been a big fan of his since he was in elementary/middle school.

 

And never once did I say this kid deserved it and that kid didn't. Carson was very deserving of the award and I'm sure he will represent the state well as Mr Basketball.

The preseason #1 team(Taylor County) was 7-8 in early January. EVERYONE was picking them to win it all. EVERYONE was picking Goodin to win Mr. Basketball before the season started. A 7-8 record in early January cost Quentin Goodin Mr. Basketball. Not politics. Not hate. An underachieving team that folks noticed got considerably better when Dylan Gaines joined the team in mid January is what people saw. Owen County wasn't even ranked to begin the season and at the end of the season folks still didn't have them ranked even though they finished 29-4 for the season including a victory over Quentin Goodin and Taylor County on a neutral court. If you don't think all of that had to do with Carson Williams getting votes over Quentin Goodin then you aren't approaching this discussion with an open mind. Your answer is right there. Many voters had no clue who Carson Williams was until the King of the Bluegrass tournament.

 

The votes for Mr. Basketball were turned in before region tournaments began on February 26. Carson's early exit had no bearing on the votes at all.

 

It isn't just coaches that vote either. Many members of the media vote and to add to those dynamics there were voters who voted for Whitney Creech and don't even know who Erin Boley is. I'd imagine there were voters who voted for Quentin Goodin and don't know who Carson Williams is. Goes both ways.

In every voting process you have two kinds of voters. Swing voters and Biased voters. The swing voters were obviously swayed by factors. The biased voters had their minds made up whether it was for Goodin or someone else. The higher combination of swing voters and biased voters tilted in Williams' favor. Let's not act like there weren't biased voters and swing voters that voted for Goodin. There were. Just not enough.

PR is everything as the voters can't see all the candidates enough. I have no problem with it, in fact I think it's awesome. It's not as if the PR was promoting an undeserving candidate. Looking forward to seeing a Mr. Basketball at NKU next year.

Agree with you 100%. The Owen County people planted a number of Carson Williams seeds in flyers, posters, emails, message boards, twitter, Facebook, etc., and the results were unreal exposure for a guy at very small high school. I couldn't tell you prior to this state tournament who Dunbar's best player was, but I knew all about Carson Williams, the next Larry Bird. That thread here at BGP multiplied into massive PR for Williams all over the state and even over in Indiana. Props to Owen County for thinking ahead.

If Taylor County had put together the type of PR campaign that Owen County did for Williams, Goodin might have won.
