No no not at all. I am saying that if a terrorist used a Smith and Wesson gun, and the FBI wanted to check the Smith and Wesson data base to see if the terrorist or known accomplices to the terrorist had also purchased a gun, I would hope the Smith and Wesson would comply.

 

Why should they? You can buy a Smith and Wesson on the street as easily as you can an iphone.

If the Feds would have taken the phone to Apple they would have unlocked it. The Feds botched it and now want Apple to design them a code to hack iPhones. So about that...

Access to encrypted data is a factor of time, money and compute power. Most entities do not have access to all three in almost infinite amounts - except for the US government.

 

If the phone self destructs after so many attempts then it seems they should still be able to clone the original a million times and then brute force hack it. If all you 'really' want is access to that one phone that should do the job.

 

Any electronic communication is within reach of the government. Its just a matter of how much effort they want to put into un-encrypting it and analyzing it.

Issa was on some show today and said the could brute force hack the phone if they want. He indicated the requested program was just to 'make it easier'. Sounds right.

 

The NSA has had very advanced 'monitoring' capability for decades. They were recording all electronic communications in and out of the country in the 80s or earlier. Enhancing that capaibility and turning it inward from 'at the border' to 'inside the border' was probably not hard and just an evoluition of their original mission.

 

I know that the government will haul companies or individuals into court when they use encryption that is 'too strong' for easy decyphering for international transmissions.

Even if you know the algorithm used, it still takes a tremendous amount of computing power to decipher the key. AES, DES, or Blowfish in their various iterations can generate 512 bit encryption keys that would take Tianhe-2 six months to a year to decipher.

Assuming they can simulate the microcode in the chipsets they could do some brute force in massive parrellel approach. When you measure your compute power by the 100s of acres there is not much that is 'unhackable'.

 

They really hate when things are 'too locked'.

 

Seems to confirm many suspicions this was about getting Apple to create a backdoor (or to create the legal ability to demand it) than it was about this one phone. If they had the ability to hack it all along - and many tech experts have been saying this since the start - then what other reason did they have to challenge Apple over it?
