An example would be if after next season Derek Willis decides to enroll in grad school at Kentucky. He would not be eligible to play for UK in the 2017-2018 season as a 5th year senior. If he decided to enroll in grad school at say Notre Dame, in a program that UK didn't offer, he would be eligible as a 5th year grad transfer.

 

That's my understanding of the rule at least.

I think I said it earlier in this thread: they'll never pin down the money. It's all cash transfers between two completely untrustworthy people. The texts link them up and the interviews with former recruits confirm that it went on. That's enough to bury McGee and UofL.

Correct. It's usually guys that only played during three of the years they were at their original institution and so have graduated but have a fourth year they can play under NCAA rules.

 

That said, if we're still living under the impression that major college sports have anything to do with education, then they've earned their degree and ought to be free to take their graduate studies at any school they choose.

I don't think anyone get's a 5th season of playing. The rule is that if you graduate you can transfer to a school that offers a degree that your current school doesn't and you don't have to sit out a year...but you still only get to play 4 seasons total. They get the 5th moniker instead of SR or JR because they have already graduated.

You seem to know all about it, tell us...what's his big secret? Gambling, drinking, drugs, hookers...what do you have?

But the concern is that then the NCAA sees the public report that Smrt has to prepare when the investigation is finished and they find out that UofL knew for certain on February 4 that they were in violation and they did nothing. They're getting out in front in hopes of reducing subsequent punishment from the NCAA. This isn't the end, it's trying to lessen the blow here at the beginning.

 

While I agree that this likely isn't the end and the NCAA will add to UL's self imposed punishment. It seems like they could have imposed something lighter like suspending Pitino for the rest of this season, which would still allow this group of kids to play in the post season. All the while they would still be acknowledging lack of institutional control by Mr. Pitino. Yes, the NCAA would likely hand down their own punishment next season on top of that, but it would have given these kids a chance to play in the tournament.

 

Your a smart man, you and I both know that the real reason UL imposed a post season ban for this year is in an attempt at damage control for years moving forward. If any type of post season ban didn't happen until next season it would effect recruiting in a big way and also open up the door for returning players to transfer out. It still may, because I doubt the NCAA is done with this, but I don't believe they will face any other post season bans. Any other punishment will be light, a scholarship reduction or two and possibly a 5 game suspension or so for Pitino.

 

It's just sad that they essentially threw this years kids under the bus, to save themselves from taking a hit in recruiting, which is ironic, since that's what caused this whole mess anyway.
