January 28, 201610 yr We were living in Germany, and it was evening when this launched. Had to make a quick run to the base commissary. Came home to see the explosion. McPapa - I will never forget the faces of the families watching the lift off. Thanks for sharing the photos
January 28, 201610 yr The most heartbreaking part to watch was Christa's parents looking up and realizing what had happened. Terrible.:cry: To be honest, I debated posting them. But they're out there for anyone to see, I guess. Watching their reaction over and over was far worse than watching the explosion; at least to me.
January 28, 201610 yr Not even being REMOTELY mechanically inclined, 1986 was the first time I had ever heard of an O-ring. Same. I would have probably thought an O-ring was an intrauterine device. Thanks NASA for clearing that up for me.

I'll be honest with you, papa, I've gotten to where I turn away whenever it shows show her parents' looking up. Bothers me to this day. A lot.
January 29, 201610 yr Author Been talking about this with some classmates on Facebook, but I don't know if anyone would've felt it down here or not (I was in northeastern Ohio) But, just three days after the Challenger disaster, at almost the exact same time in the day, we had an earthquake. I remember the initial reports wondering if there had been a major problem at one of the nuclear power reactors.
January 29, 201610 yr I was just two, so obviously no memories of the event, but it is quite an emotional experience to watch. I echo the sentiments that it is pretty brutal to watch the crowd reactions, especially as it transitions from confusion over what was happening to understanding of what they'd just seen.
January 29, 201610 yr I was in Houston that week in week-long training across the highway from the Space Center. A college class mate was going to provide a personalized tour of the Center with her broad access as an IT contractor. But that was disrupted by the memorial that included the President that day. The only tour was late in the day driving around the complex after everyone was gone. It was all locked up and and shut down that afternoon. Being the home of some of the astronaughts, it was a sad week.
January 29, 201610 yr Was in 5th grade. My teacher was a space nut and had applied to be the teacher to go up. She made it pretty far in the process. She had a Couple of kids watching on a tv in the gym. They were to come back and get us once it had taken off so we could go watch the replay. I'll never forget them running back in to tell us what happened.
January 29, 201610 yr We must've had bad weather or something because I was at home watching on the floor at my parents' old house. Pretty awful to see.
