I remember Columbia very well.

This has been a deadly time of year for the space program.

 

January 27th (1967) - 3 astronauts killed on pad during an Apollo launch

January 28th (1986) - 7 killed during Challenger liftoff

February 1st (2003) - 7 die during reentry on Columbia

Boy I remember the 1967 fire but hadn't realized it was the same time of year.

Even in Florida, maybe they shouldn't do this stuff in the dead of winter.

I was in college, coming back from class and the launch was about to start. I stopped in the lobby and watched on TV with about a dozen others. It was shocking. I sat down and watched for a while, feeling numb.

 

A few months earlier, I sat in the exact same place and watched Pete Rose hit #4192

 

Two very different emotions from the same seat.

The most heartbreaking part to watch was Christa's parents looking up and realizing what had happened. Terrible.:cry:

Not even being REMOTELY mechanically inclined, 1986 was the first time I had ever heard of an O-ring.

I was working at the University of Michigan Hospital. I remember glancing over at a patient's TV and asking him what that odd looking smoke trail was. Weird how certain historic things freeze you in time.
