4th grade...we came back to class early from gym at Western Hills Elementary to watch it in Mrs. Wilson's class. Wasn't sure what exactly happened, but it didn't feel right. When we saw Mrs. Wilson crying...our fears were realized. We spent most of the remainder of the day watching news coverage and talking about it.

This cat predicted the disaster 6 months ahead of time. He was an engineer who worked for the company that manufactured the solid rocket boosters.

 

Letters of Note: "The result would be a catastrophe..."

This guy called NASA and told them not to launch. Can't believe the condescending opinion they had. I watched it live on TV. Tragic! Same thing with Columbia later, an older retired NASA engineer told them it had taken the hit on the wing during liftoff and said maybe could have come in at a different angle with heat shield tiles taking the friction of re-entry but no one thought there was any alternative. Tragedy again.

Been talking about this with some classmates on Facebook, but I don't know if anyone would've felt it down here or not (I was in northeastern Ohio) But, just three days after the Challenger disaster, at almost the exact same time in the day, we had an earthquake. I remember the initial reports wondering if there had been a major problem at one of the nuclear power reactors.

 

Felt it down here in Kentucky. Was putting laundry in the dryer in my basement and felt the tremor. Scary week.

Such a loss when these small schools were closed. Smaller was better IMO, everyone looked out for one another and ALL our parents knew each other AND the teachers. A great time to grow up.

Have not been in there for years. I think I went back for some sort of reunion day. Wonder what kind of shape it's in? Never saw any other school constructed like it. I guess our school really did revolve around athletics and physical fitness. ( Sorry, I can't use the PE abbreviation because I had an educator reprimand me one time.) I think maybe the WOW has the Germantown School for sale? also. Their PTA, before it was closed, worked and got that building put on the Historical Registry so it cannot be changed outside in any way except for maintenance reasons, so it cannot be torn down. I know Western Hills was too new at the time. Sorry back to the thread.

I go back to the Kennedy assassination (9 years old when that happened), so I remember all the major events and tragedies since then.

Our school was out that day due to snow covered side roads. I was sitting in our local restaurant with a group of guys that were in there every day to chat and gossip, when an elderly lady came in and said in an agitated nervous voice, "They're all dead! The school teacher and all the rest! That space craft blew up right after launch. All are dead!"

Everyone started leaving to go find a TV because the restaurant didn't have one.

Sure doesn't seem like 30 years, though.

Was a soph. at NKU, off school that day and was watching it live in the kitchen while making something to eat.
