Donald Trump = George Wallace

Featured Replies

I don't believe delivery is all that is behind Trumps appeal. His immigration policies speak directly to the costs of illegal immigrants entering out penal system. I also find screening visa applicants based upon qualification to be perfectly reasonable, and the governments of Canada and Australia agree with me. We clearly do not have the ability to effectively vet foreign nationals for safety considerations. I find that suspending foreign national visas based upon religion perfectly legitimate. Foreign nationals are not privileged to enter this country.

Code words are still there. Will always be there. Can't be ignored.

I am in no way comparing the two as far as their beliefs. I do not believe that Trump is a racist. Wallace was.

Trump is not having the great success he has because of his policies. The fervor is because "he speaks his mind" "he's not afraid to say what people are thinking" etc. The people are not reacting to his thoughts on economic policy or because of "small government." They are reacting because he's talking about Mexicans and Muslims.

THAT is the tact Wallace took. Damn the details of policy. Play to extreme fear and prejudice.

Wallace and Trump are/were both segregationists. They both wish/wished to exclude certain types of people from Main Street America.

The difference between Trump and Wallace is that Wallace played to a fear that had no basis in reality. The fears Trump plays to are LEGITIMATE issues of national security, national economic competitiveness, and relatively uncontrolled immigration.

George Wallace is remembered solely as a racist. As you mentioned Trump is not. So I would disagree with your comparison to Trump.

Then you're not comprehending.

Then you're not comprehending.

I comprehend this. Donald Trump=George Wallace is your headline. Not even remotely true.

Too simple. I said in my OP that all politicians play on fears to some level.

Trump has taken it not only to a higher level it is 99% of his campaign. He's not talking about fear of no health insurance or fears of guns or fears of anything other than fears of certain types of PEOPLE. Like Wallace.

Again I disagree. What do people remember most about Obama's campaign , Hope and change. It's just one side agreed with that message and now the other side thinks we need to Make America Great again . There is no difference.

If by a certain type of people you mean people here illegally and breaking laws that is nothing like Wallace. Trump isn't making policy against all Hispanics or all Muslims. He wants to stop Illegal immigration and asked for a freeze on Muslim immigration after a terrorist attack. A call I disagreed with. But is a far cry from Wallace.

Again I understand completely the angle you are taking and comprehending. I've read it multiple times and happen to disagree and think it misses the mark.

Gotcha. Ignore the real debate.

Let's not forget that there also was a populist side to old Dixiecrats such as George Wallace, Lester Maddox and others. So when Trump says he wants to bring back manufacturing jobs from China, etc., he's tapping into that as well. In other words, there's more to this Wallace-Trump comparison than just exclusionary policies and fiery rhetoric. Good thread topic.

I disagree. That may be what you see it as, most see it as we need to enforce our immigration policies.

No real policy being discussed. Just "taking America back" (code words) and fences.

Now THAT'S funny. As if "Hope & Change" weren't code words.

On almost every policy decision that came before him, Obama simply voted "Present". Yet the Democrats hailed him.

What was "Hope and Change" code for in your mind?

I'm no Trump fan but I'd say you are taking a huge jump to compare the two. Though this isn't the first time I've heard it. This happens on both sides where to take a huge leap and find an extreme example to compare someone. Trump actually does have policy's out there now you can research.

How many people followed Obama because of his slogan or his policy. Hope and change is what won the election not a specific policy.

Trumps slogan isn't taking America back. It's Make America Great again. There is a huge difference.

Please don't start this code word argument again either.

Agreed, VERY tiresome.

Again, I'm not debating his policies or their chance of being effective. Separate debate.

I am comparing his success that is 1000% due to his rhetoric and how it is very similar to the strategy used by every politician EVER..

Fixed it for you.
Gotcha. Ignore the real debate.
Donald Trump is the most boisterous presidential candidate that I have ever seen. He can be rude, arrogant, outspoken and brutally honest. This is nothing new for Trump, he's always been that way.

He did not create the fears that Americans are facing, as you said he plays to them just like the other candidates do. Your question was aren't Trump and Wallace the same? No, in my opinion they're not even close.
