Donald Trump = George Wallace

Featured Replies

Aren't they the same?

While all politicians play on fear to some degree (are you better off ? Jobs should stay here. etc) Trump is the most blatant at playing to the base fear/hatred of a decent-sized segment of society.

It's no different than George Wallace. George was allowed to avoid having to use code words but it was the same ploy. Us against "THEM."

No real policy being discussed. Just "taking America back" (code words) and fences.

Obama=Bozo the clown too

I havent heard Trump say he hates anyone.

I hear him say stop letting immigrants into the country until we can clean up our mess and get things right.

Stop letting Muslims into America until we can be sure they are not terrorist.

Nothing wrong with that. Wouldnt you rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks. You reinforced what I thought.

As someone who actually attended a George Wallace campaign rally, yes, I would say the premise of this thread is valid. I could see where one could even argue that Trump is the more inflammatory of the two.

I'm no Trump fan but I'd say you are taking a huge jump to compare the two. Though this isn't the first time I've heard it. This happens on both sides where to take a huge leap and find an extreme example to compare someone. Trump actually does have policy's out there now you can research.

How many people followed Obama because of his slogan or his policy. Hope and change is what won the election not a specific policy.

Trumps slogan isn't taking America back. It's Make America Great again. There is a huge difference.

Please don't start this code word argument again either.

But if it would only save one life, or a woman from getting raped, wouldn't it be worth the effort..

I don't like Trump and will not vote for him but he does get one thing right that I say is 100% better than Obama. The rights, the lives, and the feelings of an actual American citizen are far more important ANYONE who is not.

Code words are still there. Will always be there. Can't be ignored.

I am in no way comparing the two as far as their beliefs. I do not believe that Trump is a racist. Wallace was.

Trump is not having the great success he has because of his policies. The fervor is because "he speaks his mind" "he's not afraid to say what people are thinking" etc. The people are not reacting to his thoughts on economic policy or because of "small government." They are reacting because he's talking about Mexicans and Muslims.

THAT is the tact Wallace took. Damn the details of policy. Play to extreme fear and prejudice.

Again, I'm not debating his policies or their chance of being effective. Separate debate.

I am comparing his success that is 1000% due to his rhetoric and how it is very similar to the strategy used by Wallace.

So Clyde, are you prepared to press the lever for Hillary this fall if Trump is the GOP nominee? Perhaps instead of being part of the electoral sheep that makes voting decisions based upon what mass media feeds you, you might consider reading some of Trump's books before making a voting decision. Need I remind you that Barack Obama and George W. Bush had wonderful media personalities. Two very weak presidents for different reasons, but effectively marketed.

Interesting that you've pegged me as "electoral sheep."

Folks, this thread is simply about campaign strategy in regards to style.

I am NOT comparing policies. I am not comparing Trump's potential success as a POTUS to any other candidate nor past POTUS.

Let's keep it focused.

Here's hoping that Trump does not have his own Arthur Bremer.

Code words are still there. Will always be there. Can't be ignored.

Again my point is Obama did the same thing.

Too simple. I said in my OP that all politicians play on fears to some level.

Trump has taken it not only to a higher level it is 99% of his campaign. He's not talking about fear of no health insurance or fears of guns or fears of anything other than fears of certain types of PEOPLE. Like Wallace.
