Yes he is.

There are some views of that hit here that I had not seen before. Since I was at the game, I had only seen the last one which was inconclusive. But the others ones in this video are pretty clear to Burfict's intent. I also think that a good athlete such as Burfict could have avoided the head shot. I don't agree with the thought process that he didn't have time to adjust. The brain of a skilled, trained athlete needs very little time to realize that the ball is overthrown and to tell the body that an adjustment is necessary. Burfict was obviously not looking to make the appropriate play to win the game, but was selfishly more interested in punishing Brown. That cost the Bengals the game. I believe Jones' penalty made less of a difference (although it was unforgiveable). I think Boswell was kicking well enough to have made that kick from 50 yards (his 35 yarder was right down the middle).

Then I think that is a big difference especially with the weather conditions. 35 and 50 are night and day with what's on the line not to mention what might have happened as they would have tried another play most likely. But what could have been... if Jones professionally points out that Porter is on the field without getting a flag himself. Refs make the right call and flag him. Now the ball is back to where it was before the hit even happened. That's the part that hurts.

My son and I both commented that he booted more balls out the endzone on kickoffs than he typically does as well. The elements didn't seem to bother him at all. As a matter of fact, his tryout at Heinz after the rotating kicker fiasco at the beginning of the year (which put them in this wc game in the first place IMO) was done in a downpour with the 2 other candidates for the position and he was perfect in a very tough venue under very tough conditions.

There is a difference between kicking a 50 yard field goal in the rain with your season on the line rather than a 35 yard field goal. Usually even the trajectory of a longer kick starts off lower which is why longer kicks get blocked more than shorter kicks.

 

By the time the Bengals had their penalties and complete melt down he didn't even feel much pressure anymore. Shoot after the two penalties even the crowd was in shock and wasn't even loud for the kick. If Adam Jones doesn't get his penalty the crowd still may have been in it for the kick too. Just complete worst case scenario for the Bengals.
