Prep Football Opinion: Making the playoffs should be deserved

Featured Replies

Here's another thought. If you know they playoffs are in your future, would you not work harder through the entire season? In many 8 team districts, at least two teams were eliminated by the 5th week of the season. If they improved in weeks 8-10 it meant nothing, so where is the drive to keep getting better each week? People over 18 should have a hard time making the playoffs and winning championships. It's my belief that opening the door to more kids to keep playing hard through at least one week of the playoffs is a plus for the kids...

Definitely diminishes the accomplishment. :thumb:

Any kid may be proud to wear the ring; but not "quite" as proud.

While I'm not gung ho about the 6 class system, its absurd to think that a kid who wins a ring is somehow going to be the slightest bit disappointed or embarrassed to show off the ring.

Its blowhards like us on here that think that somehow its diminished.

Amen.

:thumb: I agree 100% Not only do the kids lose intrest but so do their fans after game 5 or 6. I truly believe this will stir more intrest in "The Greatest Game" and if more kids are involved for longer periods of time how can that be bad? Who knows maybe your kids team is one of the "cinderella" teams that pulls that upset. All around "Great for the Game"

I agree. Take it a step further and open the door to the last 13%, get rid of district play altogether, and have a blind draw for all the teams in the first round of the playoffs.

While most of the District games involving #1 vs #4 are blowouts I think the experience being in a playoff game helps any program, especially the younger players. When they see teams such as Beechwood,NCC,Danville,Boyle Co. just to name a few they see what it takes to become successful. No one wants to get beat 50-0 but it still can prepare younger players as to how the top teams operate.

Why is this opinion not aroud in basketball? How many teams don't make the District Tournament???
Because in virtually every other sport, sanctioned games can be safely played at least two or three times a week. This isn't the case in football. The comparison between football and other sports is apples and oranges.

Isn't 6 classes a fair answer to that problem???

I don't think so. Even with six classes, not everyone will get in.

It could be done with three or four classes, if Kentucky was willing to shorten the regular season. That is how Indiana did it ... their schools play only eight or nine games during the regular season.

I'd love to see a thread with how it could be done in a 4 class system with the playoffs AND distriscts worked out in an even fashion. Talk about travel concerns...

As a former high school player, 8 games would not have been enough. Your high school career ends fast enough so I welcomed the 10 game schedule. Also with playing only 8 games the loss of money becomes a factor.

I'm not an advocate of shortening the schedule to let everyone in the playoffs. I think four teams per district is too many, but I'm obviously in the minority there.

At least we agree that 8 team districts are a joke...

I don't necessarily agree with you on that ... with 54 teams per class, it's going to happen sometimes.
