Prep Football Opinion: Making the playoffs should be deserved

Featured Replies

I don't necessarily agree with you on that ... with 54 teams per class, it's going to happen sometimes.

And it's going to kill a few programs along the way. With a 0% chance to make the playoffs in 9 of 10 years, why care???

No team has a "zero" chance to make the playoffs. There are a lot of bad programs out there, but the problems are primarily from within.

Why care? For the love of football and competition. There are a lot of football players out there that never participated in the playoffs but are better people because of their football experience.

Garbage. A bad experience is a bad experience. Getting pounded every week is NOT a positive thing for a kid from 14-18. And there's no way to spin it that makes what you say true. In an 8 team district format Scott and Bracken Co have MAYBE one chance in 10 years to make the playoffs in their curent district...

I would guarantee there isn't a kid in the state that wins one of 6 titles who would feel that way. But I keep forgeting that the game is played for the adults...

Isn't this the same philosophy that says all the teams should get trophies and all the athletes get participation medals? We certainly don't want to hurt anyone's self esteem! Why not just have 200 divisions so everyone can be a state champ?

Who gets a trophy for losing in the 1st round of the playoffs? You still have to EARN a title any way you slice it with this system. Do you really think every kid that has a ring from after the move to 4 classes think their title is a joke. Give me a freakin break...

Arm or leg? :D

What's garbage about it? If a team is "getting pounded" every week, their problems go much deeper than a seven-game district schedule.

Scott's problems, I suspect, are as much internal as anything. Their competition isn't unbeatable.

Bracken County just started football ... who is to say they can't have a winning program in a few years?

Scott's problem is that kids in Taylor Mill that want to be the best on the football field go to other schools (Poland was an exception, but grew up when it wasn't an 8 team district). That seems to have increased when they moved into an 8 team 4A district that assured they were not going to compete.

With Beechwood/NCC/Ludlow/Holy Cross (started about the same time as BC)/Bellevue in front of them, I SERIOUSLY doubt the new program has the legs to stay around long, much less make the playoffs once every 10 years. HC pretty much sold their soul to make it happen, and I don't see a coach picking up kids from Cincy every morning to make it happen...

While I'm not gung ho about the 6 class system, its absurd to think that a kid who wins a ring is somehow going to be the slightest bit disappointed or embarrassed to show off the ring.

Its blowhards like us on here that think that somehow its diminished.

Good point :thumb:

Again, the only problem is adults wanting to rule a game set up for the best interest of the kids...

I guess it's all in how the kid looks at it. Not absurd in the least - but please don't misquote me. The point I was making was that they might be proud of their ring; but they would have more reason to be proud, had they earned it in competition with a larger group of teams. I never used the words dissapointed or embarrassed.

Have you ever had a player from after the move to 4 classes tell you their HHS ring meant less? Gino? J-Lo? Frisk? Smith? Nevels? Mitchell? Anyone???

Again, it sounds as if Scott's problem has something to do with their own program, especially if some of the most talented players are flying the coop on a regular basis.

Again, who is to say that Bracken can't be successful? The program is still in its infancy.

There is a program in western Kentucky (Heath) that made the state finals in its fifth year of varsity competition, beat an eventual state champion about 3-4 years later (missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker) and had a winning season for each of the first 19 years of the program's existence.

I'm not saying that Bracken will do anything remotely resembling that, but if they can enjoy some success (a few wins) early on and get the community behind the program and the kids eager to play for it, who knows?

Do Scott and Bracken have more of a chance with the likes of Dixie/Boone/Ryle/Beechwood/NCC and others ending their season before it has a chance to get going? 8 team districts is BAD for KY football from my experience covering it...

There is no reason a school like Scott can't have a competitive program. Their inability to compete has much more to do with the program than the fact that they are in an eight-team district.

I've been watching football in this state for longer than you have. Eight-team districts aren't any better or worse for football than five-team districts. Bad football teams aren't going to be competitive no matter whether they're in a smaller district or a bigger one.
