Somerset Coach Cries Foul On New Alignment

This raises some concerns about the whole process:

However, from a competitive standpoint, Jumper head coach Jay Cobb says he isn’t concerned at all.

Cobb’s beef is with the way this new realignment proposal came to fruition, and the Jumper head coach had plenty to weigh in on, when talking about the subject.

“There’s no integrity at all in this deal, and you can quote me on that,” stated Cobb. “There’s no integrity whatsoever about this whole process.”

“People can say what they want, and you can get all these guys that are on the Internet talking about what a great idea this is, but the bottom line is, I feel like there’s a silent majority out there that’s against this,” said Cobb. “I’m a regional rep in Class A, and I can tell you that the coaches haven’t been polled on this matter, but it’s just been a few people that’s been meeting behind closed doors, and meeting behind the scenes. At the athletic director meetings in the spring, only two of them raised their hands in favor of this, and one of them was from Southwestern.”

“However, it’s bad for football because now teams, like a Danville for instance, are in a district with four teams, which means they have to find seven non-district games, and they’re going to have to pay people more to get a game with them,” said Cobb. “So from that standpoint, that makes it bad for football, and it’s going to be a nightmare trying to find games to fill out a schedule. Plus, you’re going to have a lot of travel time with teams having to go so far to play, so I don’t think it’s good at all. People can say what they want about it, but the bottom line is this. This is nothing more than the public verses private debate, and this is a way to appease some of those people, and get them talking about something else besides the public-private issue. It’s really no more than that, and there’s been no integrity throughout this whole process whatsoever.”

New football alignment receives mixed reviews

Coach Cobb needs to pay closer attention at the KFCA clinic during the state final games. Not only was it brought up, people where asked to raise their hands and give an opinion, and the only way it was brought about was because the football advisory board recommended it. The KFCA president also sent out an e-mail to coaches to get their opinion.

Didn't Somerset cry for years to get out of the Danville district? Now they are in with all of Harlan County, plus traditional "powers" Williamsburg and Pineville, along with Lynn Camp.

With the new alignment, they're complaining again? Whether it was done behind closed doors or not, they will absolutely love the gates from Corbin, Middlesboro and Leslie County compared to Cumberland, Evarts and Pineville. Might they be more upset at the thought of having to open the playoffs at Prestonsburg?

Between this and Mr. Sears' constant public-private ranting, they really are making themselves look whiny. That's truly unfortunate because the Jumpers annually are extremely competitive at every sport.

It seems to me that Coach Cobb is seeing the glass half empty instead of half full.

He should see the scheduling as a plus, now in addition to playing teams like Corbin and Middlesboro, he can go out and play some name teams in the region and get some nice gates and challenge his football team. He could go out and get a Danville or LCA. Certainly travel would not be too big of a concern then.

Or mabye thinks putting 60+ points on teams like Williamsburg and Pineville make you a better football team.

As much as I defended the N. Ky coaches, I am criticizing Cobb. Nothing was done behind close doors and I get sick and tired of people recklessly making those accusations. Furthermore, his position that he did not have the opportunity to provide input is pure, unadulterated bunk. I'm fine with him not liking the 6 classes. But his criticism about the process is total baloney.

You are killing me leatherneck. :creepy:

Ru, as I explained in my pm, I see a large difference in an article where a coach states he doesn't like the 6 classes and an article where a coach states that the coaches weren't polled, there was no integrity in the process, and that it was decided by a few people behind closed doors. The latter statements are absolutely false and you and I know it. So yes I have a problem with that and no I don't have a problem with a coach stating he's against the 6 classes. Huge difference.

Somerset already plays Danville every year along with one of the larger county schools. It is sometimes hard for a smaller school to schedule quality opponents because the larger schools have little to gain. I could really see it being a problem for a Danville. They would have a hard time finding schools around their own size that would give them any competition and playing 5 and 6A teams could really wear you down.

Anyone know who the Superintendent at Somerset is?

In the article about the NKY coaches one of them mis-represented the process so I think the two complaints are very similar.

It certainly looks like the super and the head coach should get along well.

Danville was more than willing to play us at Oldham County in a non-district game for two years in the early 90s (Sam actually contacted US about playing). We beat them both years, but I remember specifically Coach Harp telling me how much better it made their teams those years to play a team like ours (and getting to play and actually be fortunate enough to win against a team with the tradition and athletes of Danville helped us immensely too).

I'll bet there will be a LOT of the "new 4A and 5A" teams that used to have little scheduling flexibility (due to being in HUGE districts and having maybe only 3 or 4 non-district games) that would LOVE the prospect of getting to play such a storied program and one that will only make them better.

...and I know Sam Harp would be willing to play just about any level program in the state.

Maybe what coach Cobb is referring to is that HE wasn't polled. HE wasn't givin a chance to voice his thoughts. The reality is that you'll never get everyone to agree on anything. As a result if you involve too many people, progress will not happen. Most decisions are made by a small group. If that was the case with this so be it.

I wrote my response but I'll bite my toungue on this thread.
