Taking Pitino out of the discussion, if a college coach flips off opposing fans should that coach be suspended or reprimanded by his AD?

 

Big 10 Reprimanded an Ohio St player a few years ago for his classy gesture.

Wyoming coach Joe Glenn apologized after doing it in a game against Utah a few years ago.

Rex Ryan (NFL) was fined $50,000 by his team for flying the bird and it wasn't even at a game.

Can't readily find another case of a Head Coach flipping off anyone...but I'm sure there are some.

I would not be opposed to a one game suspension.

I think a one-game suspension would be fine. If a fan flipped a coach off, they'd probably be asked to leave.

I don't really have a sense for what the punishment, if any should be, but this topic speaks to the power and insulated culture of big time college basketball coaches.

It will probably go away, but right after the game had he just said, "I got caught up in the moment and threw up an inappropriate gesture" everyone would have moved on from this.

I agree with that, but if you are a college president or AD is that something you want one of your most visible faces of the University doing? Do you just let it slide or do you hold a coach to a higher standard than a fan and hold them accountable for their actions?

Like Cal, Rick isn't one of, he is the most visible face of the University. People are held to different standards, fairly or unfairly. Had he gone Steve Harvey and held himself accountable right away that probably would have been enough. If it festers you can't let it slide.

Everyone is human, Rick is ultra competitive and his emotions took over.

 

I don't or can't blame him, things happen in the heat of a battle. His stress level due to the current scandal has to be off the charts.

 

With that said, his continued denial of what clearly looks like the "bird" is very worrisome. Own it, sit out a game, apologize and move on.

After all the unwanted attention that Ricky P. has brought to Louisville, this is at the bottom of the punishment list for me.

It's a bad look, but I'm not sure it's worthy of a suspension.

Honestly, yeah, its not a big deal. The garbage coaches and players have to put up with from fans is ridiculous. People these days are way too sensitive to insignificant things, and IMO, the one-fingered salute is insignificant.

Would the coach suspend one of his players for it? If the coach would, then I think the coach should take the same punishment he would give one of his players.
