How is this any worse than cursing at someone during a game and getting "T" up for it?

Honestly, yeah, its not a big deal. The garbage coaches and players have to put up with from fans is ridiculous. People these days are way too sensitive to insignificant things, and IMO, the one-fingered salute is insignificant.

A lot of people have to put up with non sense from others at their jobs. Very few can flip the bird without being punished.

I don't think he should be suspended. But I do think he should be punished.

That's because most of us are very easily replaceable...Not quite the same when it comes to high major D-1 athletics IMO.

Well...he shouldn't be fined, shouldn't be suspended, and shouldn't be left alone, so I voted for the 4th option. It is dumb, immature, and a bad look, but after a conversation it should be put to bed. As LaWildcat alluded to, after the other stuff this cat has done, this is almost comical that we are up in arms about it. Like nailing Hoffa for tax evasion.

A coach I'm familiar with did something equally immature and dumb, he got a very thorough and humiliating dressing down with the President of the University in the room as a witness, and it hasn't repeated itself.

Move along folks.

And very few people help make their jobs millions of dollars a year, also.

Just because he has done other things doesn't mean this should be ignored. That's kind of like saying...well the dude got away with a couple of DUI's, so lets not give him a ticket for going 65 in a 35, although I do agree it kind of seems laughable what with the other goings on the past few years. However, the coach does have to be above this and shooting the middle finger at the crowd has to come with some level of discipline. I marked a big fine on the poll, but not sure if that's the correct thing or not. I would also require a public apology in front of the media.

One game suspension for me, although LRCW's answer is my favorite.

Hey, it's not like he was in the middle of Rupp and shooting fingers like the C A T S cheer! He was almost in the tunnel and just responding to a heckling fan. He should have known a camera was on him but still, let's not overreact to a simple gesture.

That's irrelevant. No one is saying he should be fired. Is he above discipline because he's not easy to replace?

If a teacher flips someone off at school would they be disciplined?

A professor at college?

A police officer?

A basketball player?

What makes Rick special?

I don't think some form of punishment is overreacting. I don't think he should be suspended a game.

So because he makes a lot of money for the school he can flip whomever he wants off?

Yes, he's beyond discipline for small stupid things like this because he'd be incredibly hard to replace. Same goes for Coach Cal, Coach K, Roy, Self, etc. They can get away with things others can't because of their status in the coaching ranks.

All those you mentioned, except the basketball player (which would depend on who it was), are all easily replaced, so yes they'd probably be disciplined.

So because he makes a lot of money for the school he can flip whomever he wants off?

Whomever he wants? Probably not. An ignorant fan? Absolutely.

Who cares?

Did everyone forget about Coach Cal calling a player a "selfish muth$&@;!?" On live tv?

That didn't bother me either......but some of you guys double standard much?

And on the flip side, he's no virgin to all this. He's heard stupid stuff shouted at him before. He knows better so he's just got to try to remember not to drop it down to the idiots level. And I admit as a fan of both schools, there is a T O N of idiots in blue and red. Let the University president handle it.
