Count me in as thinking this is ridiculous. 6 state champions in a state the size of Kentucky is just uncalled for. The only good thing about this is that it isn't the Public/Private separation that some have called for. Beechwood will win every 1a state championship there is to be had. Four classes is plenty...I'm sure I've missed it somewhere along the way but why the jump from 4 to 6. 5 is still too many but more reasonable.

I tell you what, lets not crown state champs in 1 2 or 3A this year, lets have a championship tournament instead. 4 plays 1, 3 plays 2 and then the winners advance to a final. Then we could have one state championship. I think that'll go over for about, ohhhhhh all of .5 seconds before the public/private split issue is brought up again.

Don't we have the playoff system with basketball and baseball, etc.

Private vs. public there works.

 

I don't mind the classes..I just don't think 6 sets of state champions really proves anything.

 

Might as well water it down more and have 8 state champions.

 

You'll have more fans to buy tickets, more hotdogs to sell, more hotels to rent, more gas to guzzle.

 

After all, that would be the biggest reason the state is doing this.

Because if you try and look at the numbers you will see the disparity that people are complaining about. The number of schools is not the problem, its the disparity in the size of the schools. Our state has more diversity in class size from top to bottom in both 1 and 4A presently than most anywhere else in the country. That is the reason for the debate. I don't like that we have small and big schools, I wish we had schools that were all the same size, but schools are community oriented, not state oriented. Meaning the size of the school is based upon the size of the community and the state does not mandate a minimum or a maximum. So with that said, the littlest has 50 odd male students grades 9 -12, while the largest has roughly 1500 male students 9-12. Who in their right minds think that we need to make the school with 50 boys compete against 1500, or even 50 against 500 and call it fair. PLEASE.

Whether you choose to hear it or not, there is validity to the arguments about the disparity in size between the 1A and the 4A classes.

I think 6 classes are a little much for the state of Ky! How many other sports have more than one State champ each year? Football needs six??? Here are some of my thoughts after seeing the breakdown:

 

6A: X or Trinity

5A: Very competitive class and probably will have a winner that hasn't won a championship!

4A: Highlands, LexCath, or CovCath

3A: Paducah Tighlman vs. Russell/Belfry/Breathitt winner

2A: Deepest Class by far in terms of possible teams that could win it. 5A is the only other one that comes close.

1A: Beechwood for many, many years!!!

Who in their right minds think that we need to make the school with 50 boys compete against 1500, or even 50 against 500 and call it fair.

 

What class is that taking place in? So, small schools don't ever have a chance of winning against larger schools.

 

I can think of quite a few A and AA teams i'd bet money on to beat up on AAA and AAAA teams all week long. :sssh:

Just to be clear, it will be six even classes with no super class. The super class will be considered for the future but the current agreement is for 4 years so the first chance we will have at any super classes is 2011.

So you think that 1A and 2A schools, can beat up on 3A Bowling Green, Highlands, Lex Cath, and CCH, and 4A's T, X, Male, and any other district champ? And add on top of that, winn a championship in 4A too? Then I fully expect your school to show us how silly this whole thing is and play up in 6A in 2007 and win it all. Good Luck:thumb: I honestly don't think there is one team in any class in the state who could even get to the dance that is not in 4A right now. But go ahead, prove me wrong and I'll buy wherever you say. No disrespect to 1 or 2A schools, but their is a reason that St.X, Male, and T have almost all the titles between them in 4A. Play up and find out.

I understand the idea and the reasoning. There are some schools that have it rough.

 

But I think most are close enough on comparison in their classes now that it isn't in drastic need for changing.

 

I do think it is watering down a highly sought after accomlishment.

 

And, Gametime, explain it alittle bit to me. I mean, why is this good for football and not baseball or basketball.

 

#1. Is it injuries to a football team - so bigger schools can bring in more talented backups. (can't you do that in baseball and basketball with more talent to pool from)

 

#2. Would it be the pool of talent- bigger schools have taller students to choose from for basketball teams.

 

What other states use class size for basketball championships??

Check out the scores of the Dixie vs LLoyd games in the last 5 or 6 years, and we're not even one of the big 3.

We play Beechwood starting this year for the first time a long time in week two. I expect a good game.

But one week doesn't say much, how bout you force them to play in our eight team district. I'd bet all my mustard (as you can't bet that other suff on here) that they wouldn't win the district vs. Dixie, Ryle, BC, SK, CC, Holmes, Conner, or Scott. I doubt they would make the playoffs, and if by some miracle they did, under normal circumstances that means a first round trip to Louisville Trinity and a long bus ride back home.
