KHSAA Board of Control Football Committee Approves Going to 6 Classes (Take #2)

Featured Replies

Sandman,

Can you help me out, how many teams will be divided into each district? I am trying to look at Betsy Layne's standpoint.

Presently we have 128 teams making the playoffs. 8 districts per class, and 4 classes, 54 teams per class. 6.75 teams per district. 4 playoff spots. 2.75 teams don't make it per district.

6A Super 20 and 1A (24) - With 4 even districts and a 20 team super class and 24 team 1A class, 172 out of 217. 8 districts, 43.25 teams per class. 5.40625 teams per district. 1.40625 teams per district don't make the playoffs. Not sure how they will do the districts for 1A and 6A, but I am guessing all will make the playoffs somehow.

With 6 even districts, 192 out of 217. 8 districts per class, 36.166 per class, 4.52 teams per district, .52 teams per district don't make the playoffs.

So to recap the number of teams per district and class that won't make the playoffs under the current proposals, which I think is one of the major underlying things that any reconstruction will have to include the numbers are thus.

Currently 4A even districts - 2.75 teams don't make it per district, 22 teams per class.

6A Super 16 and 1A (24) - 1.40625 teams per district (classes 2-5A) don't make the playoffs,5.625 teams per class .

6A even districts, .52 teams per district don't make the playoffs, 4.16 teams per class.

One point in the now-closed first thread I wanted to address in a post by Charlie Weis:

"I think those who are questioning a probable move to 6 classes and keeping the amount of teams making the post-season at 4 (using the watering down argument), should consider a GREAT point made by Julian Tackett at the annual KFCA meeting at Centre College back in June.

He stated in all of the following:

Moving from 3 classes to 4 in the 70's.

Taking the top 2 teams to playoffs in the 80's instead of only 1.

Take the top 4 teams to playoffs in the 90's instead of only 2.

Have any of these moves ever been detrimental to football in Kentucky??"

I wonder how many more schools play football now than were in 1975, when the KHSAA went from three classes to four. I really don't know why the decision was made then ... enrollment disparity is a good guess.

I still think this decision is motivated by selfish interests, and I remain squarely against it. Frankly, six classes will probably temper my interest in high school football.

I'll make a wager that no schools will "play up" to 6A, where Trinity and St. Xavier lurk. Programs like Highlands and Lexington Catholic are more interested in winning state championships than fulfilling some fans' desire to see them "prove they can play with the big boys."

They can do that during the regular season, and often do.

I agree. It's an everybody get a trophy mentality. 220 schools with 6 classes is the epitome of watered down.

Just curious do you think we should have 3 or 4 classes.

2 or 4 per district?

Somebody start a thread on this one for voting please, I think I've used up my allotment of thread starting for the day.:p Besides, my fingers are tired.

Hey, I got an idea, play up into 6A so it means something personnally for you. JK

At first I had my hesitations with this idea, but I have since changed my mind. 2A will be loaded with the likes of Bardstown, Corbin, Danville, Fort Campbell, Fort Knox, Glascow, Lexington Christian, Middlesboro, Newport Catholic, Pikeville, Owesboro Catholic, and of course Somerset. Sorry guys I know there are others that deserve to be in this list. Just imagine Somerset, Corbin, and Middlesboro being in the same district again, wow it gives me chills- what great rivalries we had with Corbin and Middlesboro in the past.

Sandman thanks for all the work on the class breakdown!

How many other states have a 6 class system? How many people reside in these states and how many schools do they have? I do not have the answers but I bet they are interesting, if anybody has the time to dig it up. I agree with the contingent that believes that 6 classes are too many. These are not 5 year kids where everyone gets a trophy to make them feel good. Sounds like a bunch of "adults" who have to change the rules in order to create success for their kids. In my opinion, that is the wrong path.

There will be pros and cons for us. It will be good to rid ourselves of some weak teams from our schedule. But, it may also be hard to find teams to play. I am interested to see who, if any, will "play up".

Highlands District? In this 6 class setup we will loose Grant Co, South Oldham, Madison Central. Pendelton Co isn't in any district yet. I want to see the district breakdown. I think it is very expensive for schools that have to travel alot to play in their districts. Our district is down to 5 teams now.

Bryan Station is out of the Lexington District. That will be very different.

I think you'll be wrong about that. They do want to win championships; but they want those championships to have as much meaning as possible.

Who is going to "play up" to 6A, Birdsfan?

Who is going to "play up" to 6A, Birdsfan?
Not sure; but if it is practical, I think you will see someone do it. But I can say that it's not just about winning championships. It's about winning meaningful championships.

I think Lexington Catholic could and should. They can fill the spot of Bryan Station leaving.
