When I was going through some old VHS tapes last year for material to put in the 100 years of Highlands Football Video I came across the HHS/Belfry highlights from the 89 state semi-final game @ Highlands. There was video of Coach Haywood! My gosh, he looks the same! How long has he been coach @ Belfry?
First of all, that game was a classic, overtime thriller. As painful as it was, it still is one of the greatest games I've seen. HHS went on to win the title in a close game with Tilghman and Pirate fans always have felt that one got away from us.

Secondly, Belfry got revenge to open up the next season, 1990, as HHS came to the Pike County Bowl.

And finally to answer your question...

He has been head coach at Belfry for 32 years, from 1984-2015

He was head coach at Prestonsburg for 9 years, from 1975-1983

So that is 41 years total, ATLCat is right as usual.

Highlands got the job done more in the state finals than Mayfield did. Mayfield lost 9 times in the finals.

Fort Knox (in the semis) and Danville (finals and semis) have kept Mayfield's ridiculous number of state titles from being probably twice as much from about 83-04.

Remember that game well.....

Male's Chris Wolfe and Highlands Brian Weinrich were both starters on Defense for the 89 Birds.

That 89 game was also a little payback as you say for the 79 Semi final game when Belfry came to Ft Thomas with tear-a-way Jerseys and won.....LOL! My oldest brother was on that 79 team that started 2-4 that season. People were saying back then...OMG, Highlands is 2-4 and the sky is falling!!!

Just to show you how good Highlands' program is...Belfry is in elite company as being one of VERY FEW teams who do not have a losing record against the Birds.

A tie is a win in this case!

Belfry is 2-3 against Highlands, for the record.

I always thought it was 2-2?

Egg on my face then

2 playoff losses in the 60s to the Dirty Birds, both played at Belfry :D

1979 semifinal tear away jersey win by Belfry at HHS

1989 semifinal loss to HHS at HHS in overtime.

1990 win by Belfry in the PCB in a rout

We re-lived this game a few years ago.

Poor old Birdsfan, RIP, was still pretty fired up about this and he and I discussed it many times :D

That was a great thread.

Poor Birdsfan probably couldn't watch a basketball game in person from that day...the sight of tear away warm-up pants had to give him nausea HAHA

I think MF should have been #1 :ylsuper:

Highlands is first IMO, more appearances and they don't have near the numbers T does.
