December 9, 201510 yr MLB has given a "recommendation" to teams to install safety netting out to 70 feet from home plate. Not sure how much this is a true recommendation vs a directive.
December 9, 201510 yr Long time coming.... Off topic but the "Long Time Coming" part brings to mind that seat belts have been needed on school buses forever. I've been saying it for years, and have only recently seen a report on the news talking about it. ...And yes... netting is definitely needed in MLB...foul balls are a regular part of the game forever putting fans at danger of being smashed in the face.
December 9, 201510 yr I'm surprised more people aren't badly hurt without the net. Line drives, bats, and sometimes players fly into the crowd at such high speeds. I think a net would be useful, but I don't see it happening for a while.

December 10, 201510 yr Not sure how much this is a true recommendation vs a directive. Even if it's the former it will probably act as the latter. Regardless of the fine print on tickets I'm sure any personal injury attorney would love to have the client who's injury could have been prevented by following the league's recommendation.
December 10, 201510 yr I hate sitting behind the net about as much as I hate sitting behind plexiglass at a hockey game. I feel a lot of folks today just don't pay attention at games, too busy with their noses in a phone texting, surfing the 'net. I also think MLB should have gone to some sort of composite bat a while ago. Those are my opinions, don't hate me for them. (I think if a company could come up with a clear non-glare type of netting that you could hardly notice, maybe that wouldn't be so bad.)

December 11, 201510 yr Pay attention and you don't get hit in the face with a bat... Hard to pay attention for every pitch in an over 3 hour game. Also, even if you are and a player's bat breaks when hitting a pitch, your eyes may follow the ball and not notice the bat coming at you...
December 14, 201510 yr I don't see why so many people are opposed to this. Why not extend it to protect fans? People act like its going to interfere with the view? The Florence Freedom have netting down past the dugouts and honestly, the only way you notice the netting is if you are consciously thinking about it. It will take fans about an inning to get used to this and nobody will mind it once it gets put up. Should have happened a long time ago.
