Iran breaks UN Treaty on missiles.

Featured Replies

Well that didn't take long...is the ink even dry on the agreement?

Did anyone with half a brain expect any different?

This is why you don't deal with people like Iran.

Do Liberals have a brain?

The thread title is not entirely accurate.

Iran is not party to any treaty regarding ballistic missiles. What's in question here is a UN resolution passed the day after the conclusion of the six-party talks that led to the nuclear deal with Iran back in July.

That UN resolution was designed to prohibit Iran from testing ballistic missiles that could possibly carry a nuclear warhead. Iran said on the day the security council passed the measure that they didn't see their missile program as related to the nuclear deal since the weapons were not designed for nuclear warheads.

This has been coming for months.

What matters is the nukes. That's what the deal was for and it's what we ought to care about. It's darn near impossible to stop them from developing the missiles and so as long as they never have the capability to produce weapons-grade nuclear material, things are not doomed yet.

They are not adhering to the nuke deal either. They never will.

It was a poorly conceived deal and just something to agree to so Obama could say he did something. Obama is more worried about his legacy years from now than being an effective leader.

30 years of sanctions didn't do very much and heaven knows Congress was asleep at the wheel while India and Pakistan developed their nuclear Arsenal in recent decades.

We can't go to war with everybody. We just can't do it. We don't have the money; we don't have the will.

The deal ain't perfect but we needed to do something. What was supposed to have been done?

A deal that is all give and no take is not a deal.

Sanctions needed to be tougher. This thing that was brokered gave Iran the upper hand on everything and reduced the sanctions. Real solid deal.

I never said go to war. Sometimes you have to bluff. When you're the arguably the lone super power in the world, you have to act like it. Reagan didn't strike a deal with Russia that was all give and no take. Obama has no stomach for being tough.

Saying we needed to do something got us Obamacare which is unraveling at the seams.

Not block Israel from taking care of the problem.

Not block Israel from taking care of the problem.

Sounds like the start of WWIII.

Someone will have to take care of this eventually. The longer wait, the harder to take care of it.

30 years of sanctions did a tremendous amount in damaging the Iranian regime, we just rarely hear about it because Iran keeps it quiet.

Many of the sanctions revolved around freezing Iran's assets outside of their country, preventing Iran from purchasing oil and other goods from the EU and other signatories and supporters of the sanctions and preventing other countries from buying Iranian goods. With 80% of Iranian revenue coming from exporting oil, this place a huge financial burden on Iranian government.

This burden was then passed down to the civilians. In order to attempt to curb the shock to the government revenue stream that these sanctions caused, the Iranian government removed subsidies that had been provided to civilians for everyday necessities such as electric, water and food. Additionally, inflation rates and unemployment soared. I am trying to find the article, but in my senior thesis I focused a subsection on the story of an Iranian bus driver, who claimed that since the most recent round of sanctions too effect, his bus business had become to costly to maintain and he was on the verge of being out of business. He repeatedly urged that the newly elected President Rouhani needed to do anything to get the sanctions lifted. He also remarked that if the new President was unable to do so, as he had promised in his campaign, that the Iranian people would quickly lose faith in his leadership.

The goal of the sanctions was to target the Iranian government, not the civilians. However, as was the case, the sanctions ended up being felt by the civilians. This then caused disruption amongst civilians and pressured the Iranian Government to say the right things in order to get the sanctions lifted; to maintain their power.

I have no doubt that the sanctions had a tremendous impact on the Iranian Government. However, because the Iranian government was able to lie and deceive its way out of the sanctions (Rouhani has a political history bolstered with deception), the Iranian government is now held by its citizens as heroes, and is no longer facing pressure from its citizens. Rouhani has a free pass to do whatever he pleases, so long as the sanctions do not return.

This is why it is of utmost importance that we are not hesitant to re implement sanctions in the likely event that Iran has, or will in the future, break the "deal."

As many expected, the Iranians just needed to buy some time to get their program in place without Israel killing their scientists, bombing their facilities or launching cyber attacks against them. That agreement may be the Archduke Ferdinand of our kids generation.
