The weekly unveiling has become must-watch television, or at least must-talk about water cooler talk. The powers that be have to decide where that tipping point is of excitement and lost interest. It is interesting debating Ohio State vs. Iowa vs. Bama vs. OU. That is what makes this compelling. Not sure what the interest would be if we are debating 2-3 loss teams on the back end of the top 25.

As it stands, at least one conference is missing out every season. How long will it take before those conferences realize by adding two or four more teams they can almost assure their conference is represented while also raking in even more money? (And if you think a six- or eight-team playoff won't take in more money you are crazy!)

In continuance, to add automatic qualifiers you would have to expand to 16-24 teams. I don't want to see some 7-6 ACC conference champion make the cut. With the exception of the Big 12, the power conference schools have a conference championship game. You get some bad match-ups in conference championship games.

And in my scenario, just because you win a conference championship and get an automatic bid, you would NOT automatically be a higher seed than any at large teams.

While I know you mockingly say "first time an SEC team is left out", there is some truth in glamour schools failing to qualify. I am sorry, but if we are watching Iowa/Oregon State/Texas Tech/Mississippi State as a final four, that is not going to generate interest.

Understood. I had already said go to 16 teams in my scenario, which is what I believe Mexitucky was referencing.

After seeing Getslow post the FCS playoff brackets, I really like that system for FBS.

They don't have to add a week. College football basically takes the whole month of December off. Play the first round of playoff games in mid December. It would actually make the January games better because teams would not have a month or more off in between games...

When are the student / class semester finals ? I forgot. We sometimes forget these players are also college students.

At any rate, I could see going to six teams and giving the top two a bye in 1st round. That's all I would personally go for. After six teams imo the argument that some teams give runs weak. 8 teams, the argument will be # 9, 10. 16 teams...# 17 argues. There is no end. That's jmo though.

You do obviously run the risk of having a field no one cares to watch. Just this season we could realistically see a field of UNC, Iowa, Baylor, and Florida. That would be the only way I see them expanding it; if a season would occur where the major players are all left out and ratings falter because of it.

8 teams, 5 conference winners, highest ranked non power five school, and 2 at large bids. Has to be automatic qualifiers IMO, because winning your conference should mean something. But it can't be 6 because we still run the risk of having a situation like this year where multiple teams from a conference are deserving. Also the greatest thing from this system is it almost forces Notre Dame to join a conference or they run the risk of having to get an at-large bid every year. Also I think its moronic that the big bowl games occur after a month layoff. Give a week off after the conference championships, then play the first round, give another bye week for Christmas, then play the next round. No need for this extended layoff like we've always had. Let's say we had this situation this year. (Just educated guesses on who would win each conference)

B1G Winner: Michigan State

Non-Power 5: Navy

At large: Winner of Ohio State-Michigan (assuming Mich St. beats Penn State)

Michigan State beating Ohio State is so good for the climate of college football. The wealth needs to be spread out a little. The BCS and only two teams eligible for the title was the biggest fraud in major college athletics of my lifetime. 4 teams is much improved but it is still way too elitist. 8 teams, and ideally 16 teams is much better if we all really want it best for college football. And I don't want hear how they already play so many games blah blah blah, if that is the case the schedule needs to be cut down by a game or two. Additionally, if you are not for an expansion of the college football playoffs you need to be calling for all other levels of college football to reduce the teams that get in the postseason and March Madness needs to be cut down to just a handful of teams too.

 

College Football has been so corrupt for so long and hopefully the Big 10 gets shut out of the playoff so we can all focus on what is best for everyone, not just what is best for a handful of elite programs each year.
