November 14, 201510 yr My rant and rave, and because of my views (atheist), plenty for people to disagree with: I am sick of our refusal to acknowledge that this is religious violence. As they are committing it, they shout praises to their god. They are expressly and specifically attributing their acts to religious conviction. They have verses in their sacred text that specifically command and allow the acts they are doing. While the acts are evil, and they are evil, these people are not doing this because they are evil, they are doing this because they think god wants them to. I am sick of calling them "extremists" IMO to be an extremist, one must pervert the belief system beyond reason. Westboro people are extremist, they pervert the bible beyond any reasonable interpretation. And look how marginalized they are. Everyone recognizes them for what they are. Compare that to isis, and how many recruits they are getting, how many fighters they already have. Everything they are doing is laid out for them in the koran. They have not perverted the text beyond any reasonable interpretation. They are certainly in the minority among muslims, thankfully. But being in a minority does not make one an extremist. I want to be clear before this next point is made. Do not gloss over the word "if." If they are right, If allah is the god, If islam is the correct religion, then what they are doing is not wrong or immoral. Thus, there are only two ways to combat them. One, fight them on the basis that they have the wrong religion. Two, fight them on a non-religious basis. Don't tell me that we can fight them on the basis that they are interpreting their religion wrong or in an extreme fashion. We can't tell other people how to believe, or what to believe. Not anymore than they should be able to tell us. There is a moral high ground available here. But it is a secular high ground, based on the basic rights that all human beings should have. We can take that high ground, and we can prosecute a war against isis, with all the aggression, violence, and killing necessary to wipe them from the surface of the planet. But if we take the high ground and clothe ourselves in our religion, then we in a sense forfeit the high ground by reducing the conflict to who has the right god. We are a better nation than those who oppose us. I believe we are better because we have, since our founding, dedicated ourselves, as a nation, to the belief that all are equal and all beliefs should be respected. The dedication to the separation of church and state has made us wonderfully diverse, and laid the foundation for all of our greatness. We should be bold about the fact, and it is a fact, that we are better. We need to live up to that, and eliminate them. We can do this without making it a religious war, and we have to. I hope the next president draws a line not in the sand, but in stone. And we then stand on the line. Rant over.

Agreed, even His Holiness Pope Francis hinted last spring about going after groups such as ISIS. Pray for and end of these groups, pray they those fighting them are not only successful but safe. They are not getting accomplishing what they want where they are at, so they are on the move. Sadly "There're coming!"
