Beechwood 62 Eminence 0

Yeah ... I have some thoughts ....

*It hasn't hurt any other Beechwood quarterback in the past 13 years that the OC has coached.

*One or Two miles? Nah ... I don't think so. Half the time .. the ball ends up on the hash nearest to the Beechwood sideline. 2 to 3 steps of a jog isn't going to hurt anyone. From there ... worst case .. hash to hash ... and that isn't all that far.

*Unless you are there for every play to hear the dialogue between the OC and QB .. then .. then you are assuming facts not in evidence.

*You mention Fieger only getting to play for a half in many games. Did it ever occur to you that the jog back and forth is something that BENEFITS the QB's conditioning? When a ton of games are basically over at halftime ... that jog back and forth may not help his conditioning a ton ... but it does help ... and his results certainly suggest that the jog back and forth hasn't hurt him in the slightest.

And MOST IMPORTANTLY .... you start out your post congratulating Kyle on breaking the NKY TD pass record and being close to the NKY yardage record. Fieger and the OC have obviously made this "archaic communication system" work for the better part of 3 and a half years ... while breaking records doing it.

From here ... and based on your comments ... it sure looks like this "archaic communication system" is working like an absolute charm.

Sorry to have struck such a sensitive nerve Quickslick. Understand your perspective and congratulate you on BW's results as a team, and what this fine youngman has accomplished. Wish you the very best in the playoffs and suggest he has never run just 2 or 3 yards to get any play call in his career. Midfield to sideline is 25 yards each way. That equates to 50 yards if the play is midfield. Multiply that times just 50 plays and you have 2,500 yards which equals roughly 1.5 miles, and that is if every play is exactly at midfield and requires no extra yardage for penetration into opponent territory.

Only suggesting that updating the communication system might allow for Fiegler to advance intellectually with the analytics of play calling rather then the physical challenge of running back and forth to the huddle.

You asked for thoughts ... and guess what ... you got them. Not real sure how that comes across as striking a nerve .. but if it makes you happy .. fine by me.

You asked for input .. and you got it .. you didn't like the answer you received .. so you pull the "struck a nerve" cop out (and for the record .. it took me about 4 minutes to find 50 plays where the QB ran less than 3 yards to get a play and I can assure you .. I am right). Next time .. if you don't really want input ... then don't ask for it.

When it comes to the QB and the OC ... things are obviously working pretty well (and they have been for a while). As far as advancing intellectually with the analytics of play callings ... I think he gets a ton more of that when he comes to get the play .. which also gives him an opportunity to provide input--which is something that he would most certainly not get if he was standing at the line .. waiting for a coach to yell a number that he can look up on a wristband--which again--gives him no opportunity to provide his insight.

From there ... I understand where you are coming from ... but I will take the 13 years of history ... where things have worked out well.

I just got back from a playoff game across the river. The team I went to see ... which is a traditional power in Ohio .. and the country ... does the exact same thing with their QB. It happens a lot ... and I think you would be surprised at the knowledge transfer that occurs in that 5 to 7 second timeframe. None of which would happen if it was done on field with a wristband or pictures, etc.

Different things work for different people, groups, etc. If it ceases to be beneficial ... then it won't continue.

I agree with QS that the QB getting direct instruction and plays at the sideline obviously works for some and other teams choose differently.....which QS pointed out. What some folks do not understand is the writing style of QS. It is not the most conversational and sometimes comes across as condescending. That's not the case. QS has a well informed perspective of the HS game and when shared is a benefit to the readers. Being a benefit does not mean you have to agree with QS, just understand the framework which the information is presented.

There is no way to run an uptempo style/ hurry up with the QB running to the sidelines every play. I have seen numerous times when this would help Beechwood by putting pressure on the defense. They cannot do it because of this archaic way of thinking..JMO..

I read that article yesterday, good for Kyle. Coach pointed out what he has done all while playing in on offense that runs it more than it throws it. Also amazes me when you consider they lose probably 2/3 games per year on the in district and first round of playoffs when he doesn't ever play in the second half. Bravo Kyle.

True but the other QB's mentioned had probably 5-6 games a year where they played half the game and had about one less season of starting. Still, it's super impressive what he's accomplished in his career, he's obviously one of the best ever.

Now we have the acknowledgement of Kyle Fieger's feat with some "....but" statements attached. I get that. Can anyone out there with access to stats find out what the number of pass attempts in the careers of Fieger, Guidugli, Towles and Lorenzen are? That way, it will not matter how many quarters were played and would make for an interesting comparison.

Agree and good point on the others.

How about a big shout out to BW's Kyle Fieger who broke the career TD pass mark for NKY last night. The record was previously held by Gino Guidugli of Highlands. Kyle needed one TD pass last night to break the record and secured it with 4. He is also knocking on the door of the all time yardage record in NKY and is clustered in a group consisting of Guidugli, Jared Lorenzen and Patrick Towles. Congrats Kyle.

Thanks for pointing this article out. I somehow missed seeing it but went back and read it after I saw these posts.

Big time congratulations to Kyle Fieger (please note the spelling OC). With Beechwood being a run first team, it is a heck of an accomplishment to get into those career leader stats. He has been so good this year that when he throws a pass that is incomplete it is almost shocking. He is in some exclusive company in the career stats numbers. His TD to INT ratio is the most impressive stat of his, both this year and on his career.

On the comment made in another post about Beechwood not being able to run hurry up because their play calling system, that is not true. Beechwood does have a two minute offense they use when the situation requires it and they have been effective with it.

Finally, on the comparison with the other career yardage leader QB's concerning number of games played, I would like to see the number of passing attempts by each of these QB's. My guess is Fieger's career passing attempts are pretty close among all of them. That is the key number in the discussion about games played.

Have been around this game for 50+ years, and Fiegler is probably as accurate as I have seen in high school ball. Must be in the best shape of any athlete playing the game as Hergott requires him to run to the sideline to get the next play, each and every time. Must add a mile or two to every game. Never understood this archaic communication system between an OC and his QB. Anybody else have thoughts? IMO can be problematic in later playoffs when he will need to play more than the first half.

Just interested, how would you change it? There are benefits to both styles, specifically to BW I think one of the reasons they do it the way they do is because one of BW's big advantages is a team committed to constant learning, resulting in a large playbook, which can be tough to contain on an arm band or something of that nature and a desire to give a sense of steady methodical drives that eat away at the defense. What would be your solution/how would you change it?

Not all teams want, and or need to run an up temp style of offense to pressure the defense. Sometimes they just go to the huddle, call the play, go to the line of scrimmage and execute the play....then they do it all over again. If you are successful using that formula it can be more devastating to a defense than just trying to run plays in rapid succession. JMO.

Nothing like working on conditioning during a game! I know I'm old school, but what happened to running sprints during the week and playing the game on Friday night? Wonder if he lifts weights while he isn't playing?

Passing records on KHSAA:

Guidugli: 445/715 7516 yards 92 TD's

Lorenzen: 351/588 6821 yards 89 TD's

Towles: 356/627 7431 yards 72 TD's

As far as the Fieger comparison goes to the Highlands QBs of the past....Style of offense is another factor...Lorenzen was a 2 year starter. Not sure about the other 2 Highlands QBs. I do not think they were 4 year starters either. They threw the ball much more than Beechwood does. Whatever the case, Kyle deserves the credit for his career...He has done a great job...records or not, he has proved his worth to the Beechwood program.

As Far as the game went....Hats of to the Tigers. They did what they needed to do. They put it away early, skill kids were tough, Line on both sides was dominate which included a scope and score on defense.

I agree..But there are times when an up tempo is needed, if not only to tire the defense out.

There are plenty of ways to look at it ... everyone can be right or wrong. What I can say is that when you are playing 12 to 14 "meaningful" snaps--you take what you can get in regard to conditioning. Most humanoids are going to have an elevated heart rate in a game situation ... at that point--the jog back and forth does a have a benefit in regard to cardiovascular fitness. What that benefit is ... varies from person to person. Running in practice has different effects ... and it is something that we work on and approach from a different point of view than most.

To be clear ... my main point in this conversation is that the dialogue between the OC and QB is the true benefit for both. Sometimes it is a few words ... sometimes it is more than that. From my point of view--it is a beneficial tactic.

As far as conditioning goes ... our plan changes as the year goes on. From there ... I am not going to comment on when/what/how/why in regard to this topic.

As far as a QB lifting weights? Ha, ha ... I am not sure I have ever seen such a thing!
