What One Play Epitomized the Difference Between the Bengals and the Patriots?

Featured Replies

Thank you kind sir!!!!!

1:55(or there abouts) left in the game.... Third down and 7 yards to go for a game-clinching first down . Instead of assertively trying to put the game on ice with a pass for first down, the Bengals(as the Steelers knew they would) ran a conservative play that lasted all of four seconds and gained nothing. Settled for a field goal and allowed the Steelers a chance to go downfield and attempt to win the game by a point(which they ALMOST did) . Tell me if I am wrong but there is NO WAY IN HELL that Brady and Belechek would have done the same. They would have wrapped up the win right then and there with a pass for the first down. We have a very nice team this year but that, my friends, is why the Patriots are champions and we are saddled with the albatross that is Mr Lewis' "play not to lose" philosophy. It almost bit us in the butt yesterday and it's only a matter of time until it gets us ...

The situation would've dictated what they did there. If, as in the case of the Bengals game, the Steelers still had timeouts left, NE throws it there knowing even if they run it, they're going to take the TO and stop the clock. Big difference is NE would throw one of their underneath routes where a completion is almost guaranteed. Bengals don't use those often. Had they had no timeouts, NE would've ran it up the middle and kicked the FG IMO.

The difference in the two teams is discipline. Pax Man does theta other personal foul call again if he played for the Pats.

I would have to disagree. Given the Bengal’s personnel, how well their defence was playing the FG attempt was the right call.

Penalties hurt the Bengals badly in this game. The fact that Roethidangandie'gar was having a horrible day is the only thing that saved them.

I was sitting in my family room on that last FG praying that it was not going to be a "Michigan/Michigan St" situation.

I can agree with the Bengals needing to be more aggressive in general... But unlike most Marvin coached teams, they keep finding ways to win games when their backs are against the wall...

Most of the credit goes to the players IMO, but let's give Lewis some credit here. I do think he's "learning" to coach with more confidence and it's showing this season...

Much like Dalton at QB, outside of two seasons in Bengals history... Lewis has been the MOST successful coach in team history... Sad, but true even though he's yet to win a playoff game. Health of this team will decide if he gets it done this post season.

Hindsight is always 20/20. If they had "gone for it" with a pass, and had it go incomplete, then people would be bashing Marvin about leaving more time on the clock for the Steelers. While it would've been nice to put them away at that point in time, you have to look at what you could be leaving Pittsburgh with, should you not get it. I'd rather have us playing defense knowing that the Steelers needed a TD to win it, rather than just a FG to tie.

And if they don't complete the pass, Pittsburgh has another timeout to use to drive down the field.

Still would have liked to have seen them more aggressive there. When the win is a first down away, I say snatch it right there.

One of the dumbest things I have ever seen. You do realize that they ran out of time and not downs right? I think Marvin can be criticized for a lot of things, but making them use that TO and kicking a FG to make it so a FG doesn't tie them isn't anything to be criticized for.

Whether Belichek does it or not doesn't make a difference. I can give you an instance in the Baltimore game where we went for it 4th and one before half up 14-0 when a FG would have made a 3 score lead and we didn't make it. Belichek probably would have gone for it. We shouldn't have and I said it before we did it in Baltimore.

We did the right thing yesterday, Tomlin screwed up the clock and gave us about 35 seconds. They had one TO and 80 yards. The way our defense and Big Ben were playing, it was the right thing. If they go for it don't get it and the Steelers drive it down like they did, it is a pretty certain FG and we go to OT.

Right decision that I had no problem with at the time.

The difference in the Pats and the Bengals - Brady period. He's the difference in tehm and anyone else right now.

Driving me crazy when I edit and then it posts it twice. What am I messing up?

Lewis vs. Belichek?? That is the difference.
