Yes, totally. However, he's shown himself over the course of his career to be in possession of a much firmer mental fortitude than one Andy Dalton. I have a lot more faith in him bouncing back than I would if Dalton were my team's QB.

But Ben's been in the league for much longer... Correct me if I'm wrong... Wasn't Ben as a rookie the QB of a 15-1 Steeler team that lost a home playoff game?

 

Then, his second or third year, they beat Seattle in the Super Bowl... And as I recall, Ben did not play an outstanding game even though they won.

 

Point is... When Ben was a younger QB making mistakes, he got a pass...

 

Dalton gets drug through the coals... Unfairly I might add... He was drafted to a team whose QB quit and basically had no training camp because of a player holdout.. Inherited a 4-12 team with a rookie offensive coordinator and a head coach who's yet to win a playoff game... And, oh yeah, they play in possibly the toughest division in football. That was their worst season since Dalton has been the QB... 9-7 and a road playoff loss.

 

I'm just sayin, the kid doesn't crap himself. He's been a very good QB for this historically lowly franchise.

 

I think we will just cordially agree to disagree when it comes to his mental fortitude... I could easily argue that it's his "best" attribute.. He doesn't have the arm or scrambling ability of a lot of guys, but he's always been mentally tough IMO...

I don't understand why as Bengals fan we can't have a middle ground on Andy. Did he suck , nope. Did he play great today , nope. People on both sides of the argument get so defensive. If you say Andy is good people get mad , you point out when he plays poor people get mad.

 

As a team I'm happy because normally if Andy has an off game we lose bad . But this team has matured.

 

Do I think there were moments in the game Andy seemed like he was playing nervous , yep. I could point to a few plays where he rushed open target or didn't let it go.

 

But to his credit he collected himself and made plays when it mattered down the stretch. I like this Andy. He didn't fold.

 

The bigger issue today and maybe if you watched tape there is a good reason. But the total abandonment of the run game for large stretches was mind boggling. Andy had the best protection on series where they mixed the run in.

They were down 4. Had to have a TD there or it was over. Did you observe that wrong??? :banana:

I'm with you! In game threads people must understand that it is 110% passion and heat of the moment by what is occurring at the time. Anyone who doesn't understand that has never attended an NFL game in person. That is exactly what goes on at the games. People get worried and frustrated when bad things happen and cheer when good things happen.

 

Dalton is having the best year of his career. I'm loving it. At the same time when he does bone head things it frustrates people, me included.

 

It is what it is. Anyone who thinks it's either or just doesn't understand sports.

 

If anyone who was complaining about what was said in the update thread actually paid attention, they would know just like you pointed out, the biggest concern during the game for me was the coaching. Hue had his worst game as OC this year. How you can abandone the run when it was really the only real thing that worked was beyond ridiculous.

To be fair he gets judged like every athlete based on post season wins. It isn't anything new. Peyton Manning had the same grumblings early in his career. Once Andy wins in the postseason the narrative changes.

 

I hope the narrative changes it would be nice to have a playoff win I could remember. I'm a jaded bengals fan because I don't know what winning is like. My entire child hood was the 90s . I was 6 during the last super bowl.

Jim ... I get where you are coming from. But Dalton definitely looks different to me this year. I did not see him panic or force plays today even after the INTs. As you said, the INTs really weren't bad plays by Dalton. The end zone INT - that looked to me like the Steelers knew exactly what was coming on that play, sort of like the Super Bowl end zone INT last year by the Pats. If the Steelers DB wasn't jumping that route from the get go, that is a TD. The second INT, like everyone said was even better than a punt in that situation. After those plays, Dalton leads the Bengals to the winning TD. Dalton played like old Ben and Ben played like old Dalton at the end of this one today. Even the key play in the TD drive was Ben-like, with Dalton extending the play then flipping the ball to GIO for the big game.

Has gotten a lot of flack for disappearing in some big games. Even ones where the OC at the time (Gruden) used him as a decoy an entire half of a playoff game and intentionally didn't have Dalton throw to him.

That doesn't make the narrative any less lazy. The Bengals as a whole have been bad in the playoff game each of the last four years. Andy, along with pretty much everyone on the roster have not been good enough.

 

And the problem with your first sentence is Andy doesn't get the glory when things go well. Only the blame when they don't. That's my issue...
