BW is what they are. Not very creative offensively, although they did run a couple nice plays last night tbat varies from their normal trends. Not sure my opinion of this team has changed since week 1. Very good skill kids, real question is on the line. Granted New Cath was daring them to throw it by stacking the box-bad choice as they found out in first half-but they were getting beat all night at POA. Their lineman really attack off the snap, and Theee simply wasn't much space to run. Fieger showed his experience and did a wonderful job avoiding pressure and rolling the pocket but seemed he was under duress all night. Dline did ok. Jacob Smith had one big run for a TD, but other than that they bottled him up pretty well. He is such a fun player to watch, on on 3rd and long he was conpletely surrounded and stopped but showed a hip here and a leg there and there were BW jock straps all over the field. Stringer never hit the big one that he always seems to hit, but ran as hard as I've ever seen him run. He was delivering a lot of punishment at the end of runs, I'd say he had at least 25 carries? What I read on here is pretty typical from the BW old guard like VOR and OSD. They constantly look for one thing to criticize that kid about, and jump all over him as soon as he does it and rarely do they show him any love. Kid never comes off the field and plays hard. Even Slusher tapped out a couple times last night and went to the bench for a break, guess he should too. Looked to me there is a conditioning issue and he just ran out of gas in the play with Smith. Coaches need to address that. Think that's normal in this game, both terms have pretty easy games for a month leading up to this one and may slack off. What NCC found out is what teams haven't figured out. You can stop the BW running game, but Fieger and Slusher will kill you. I would love to see 32 and 22 be more of the game plan. Both are big play kids and could ease the stacking the box and doubling of Slusher. Seen some comments around him, but #11 for BW is my favorite player on that team. What a scrapper. He is really undersized, but he is always right on the defender and battles his tail off. NCC tested him a couple times, and they did get a jump ball for a TD, but he won more battles than he lost. For NCC 72 is a monster. He was in the BW backfield all night, simply dominated his opponent. 5 and 7 are really good too. Both kids were all over the field. NCC was much more physical than BW.

 

On a side note, I'm not one to criticize officials but that crew did a very poor job. They're were a couple blatant face masks calls on both teams right in front of the white hat that he somehow missed. Fieger almost had his head ripped off and nothing. It seemed they came into this game only concerned about controlling the PF scenario and missed about everything else.

Little doubt in my mind who the best football player in NKy is.........Brett Slusher. I am surprised the kid isn't selling burgers in the stands. Brett seems to be all over the field on both sides of the ball..

 

What other player in the state can impact a game the way Slusher does on both sides of the ball? The only one that compares from what I know is Kash Daniel, Paintsville's QB and LB who is headed to UK. Slusher had a half dozen plays last night that were wow moments and they were about evenly split between offense and defense. Three TD's on offense. Two fumble recoveries on defense on plays where he also forced the fumble. The kickoff return they put him in for ... there is nothing there and he keeps cutting, running through tackles, and comes a hair from breaking it for a TD. I think every player on NCC's return team had him lined up for the tackle or hit him on that play and the last player was able to hang onto his feet and trip him up. On defense, the play where he came down the line from the backside caught Smith and tackled him was awesome. This kid is something special.

I forgot to mention, Maleek Lawerence is the most impactful DLineman that I have seen at NewCath since Kiernan and Smith about 10 years ago. He was at the point of handoff 2 times last night and his penetration caused Stringer to have to cut back quite a few times.

 

Does Beechwood run a stretch zone blocking scheme? Stringer looked like he had options on cutting back that were part of the blocking scheme and not just improve.

Just watched on Hudl. Some other kids that played great, that guys like VOR will not point out on his quest to get one kid POY. Trust me I am as big a Brett Slusher fan as there is on the planet, but it kind of irks me that he is given the plaque as a one man team.

 

Trevor Soward. 2 big catches on O for 43 yards. Was everywhere on D, made the last big tackle on D causing the fumble that Slusher picked up.

 

Daniel Mescher. Backup kicker made two big FGs, all his XPs, and perhaps his biggest play of the night was he made the hit on Smith that caused the fumble on the kick return, Smith may have been gone on that play.

 

Lucas Benson/Kyle Rowe/Jacob Overstreet. Played very well on D, except for Smith's 61 yard TD run he did very little in the run game.

 

It's already been mentioned how well Kyle Fieger played. Made one mistake that many NFL QBs make, did not see the DE dropping into coverage and the kid made a nice leaping INT. Other that that he was almost flawless in the face of constant pressure.

 

Ethan Stringer had 136 yards on 27 carries, tow catches for 22 yards and have a 50 yarder called back. I have rewatched that play 20 times, no idea what that white hat called a PF on. I know Rash was ticked.

 

Elijah Mckinney This is the young CB in question. He plays fantastic, love his style. Yes, occasionally teams hit a jump ball on him, but he will never back down and gets right back up. Love love love this kid

 

Jacob Cottingham This kid will hit you in a second. Plays great on ST and most teams avoid him on D from his CB position. Big and strong for a corner, huge asset to the Tigers.

 

Again I reiterate what an awful job these refs did. Was even more glaring the no calls on HUDL that it was in person. They had one thing in mind, to limit and recognize any extra action to throw a flag for a PF. Stringer almost took the QBs head off on a blitz on 3rd and 40, would have given them a first down. Fieger almost was killed on a face mask as well. Holding on the edge on NCC quick pop passes were ridiculous, right in front in front of the line judge.

Smith Update: Was told Jake thinks he's playing this Friday (could play if they really needed him) but the plan is likely to let him rest this week and be good to go for week 2 of the playoffs.

 

Needs 207 yds to become Newcath's 2nd all time leading rusher and 8 tds to break the record.

TheFauxTiger ... Good job mentioning the other players. All those you mentioned played well. I could list 6 players for New Cath that also had similarly good games. In fact, I could list a more than a half dozen players like that every game. I am not promoting anyone for anything - not Slusher and not any of the players you listed. All I am doing is commenting on outstanding play and Slusher just happens to make outstanding, wow moment plays, every game. That is just the way I see it.

 

It's not like anyone is looking for me to recognize or promote them on here. I am just one of many Beechwood posters and I doubt any of those players care what I post on here. But, let me point out that I have recognized other players. Fieger, Overstreet, Stringer and others have been recognized by me for their play. I know it may seem like Slusher gets more than his share, but the fact is he is making the plays every week that earn that recognition.

 

Beechwood is far from a one man team. Everyone has to do their job and play well and this team as a whole has done that. The line has come a long way. If we want to give some other players credit, I thought Hermes had one of his best games last night. Rowe and Sherron also played well on the defensive line. The offensive line had perhaps their best game of the year. I thought they did a pretty good job on NCC's standout DL Lawrence, with Overstreet leading the way on the o-line. Everyone played well and that is what it will take to get that state championship trophy back to Ft. Mitchell

Facemask on the 3rd and 40 would not have been a first down automatically. Depends on what was happening at the time of the penalty.

Smith had 110 yards on 15 carries.

TheFauxTiger, appreciate all your observations. I, too, love #11, McKinney and his game. Effort, passion, heart, technique all solid and to be 1st string DB on the Tigers speaks for itself. That being said, at 5'5" he can be in perfect position and a quality QB with a 6'3" receiver (that is a 10 inch height advantage and probable off the charts reach advantage) should be able to consistently make that completion. NC only targeted this twice and had the matchup all night. The first went for a TD and the second was well defended, but just overthrown. The matchup was poorly identified by NC and not taken advantage. #11 gives his all and is worthy of his role. Just saying, progression through the playoffs might create lots of mismatch challenges, but I think the Tigers will be in Bowling Green.

You are absolutely nuts and that's obvious to everyone on here! I was complimenting the BW defense, it has nothing to do with Smith. If he's the anointed one then you should be able to take the bad with the good because you obviously don't have a problem mouthing off when all is good.
