September 29, 201511 yr Not only that the NFL is using it as a source and pimping for the site on TV.
September 29, 201511 yr I don't put a lot into PFF anymore. It's neat to looks at but nothing to get worked up over.
September 29, 201511 yr Then I guess almost every other qb should be getting ratings of -100?:idunno: They pretty much negated the 3 goal line passes, like they shouldn't count because of how short they are. Do they not know how hard it is to make a pas like that...that quick, on time and where the receiver needs it to be thrown? If it were that easy, EVERYBODY would do it.

Former Bengals receiver Cris Collinsworth brings data analytics firm to Cincinnati - Insider - Story Wow, didn't know that but it certainly explains why all of the sudden the NFL is pimping the site.
September 29, 201511 yr I thought the explanation was pretty clear. No issues. The negative number doesn't mean "poor." They just said it was a little below average. I get that the stats make that hard to grasp but they don't grade off of stats. Cris has a great business going. 19 teams subscribe to his service for player evaluation.

Former Bengals receiver Cris Collinsworth brings data analytics firm to Cincinnati - Insider - Story Yes, Cris owns it. He bought it from a guy in England and is now partners. The guy moved from England to Cincinnati where it's now based. Cris' son Austin also works there. They evaluate every play for every player. NFL teams use their service to supplement scouting. They now also do this for colleges and are looking to create local market TV shows in NFL cities. Gold mind for Cris.
September 29, 201511 yr Author I guess they are trying to bring money ball to football? I guess so, but there are much better metrics to use than their grading system. I'd say it's more likely a company is trying to capitalize on the trend toward mainstreaming quantitative analyses popularized by Nate Silver. The dirty little secret is that they are making as many qualitative assumptions as anyone else, they are just turning into a number which gives it the veneer of objectivity and being "scientific" without really being either.
September 29, 201511 yr Here's the old "eye test" versus stats conundrum. See it a lot in baseball, guess it's making it's way over to football now. I read their article, and without getting into the formulas and the weight they assign to each statistic, I do, at least, understand what they are saying. For instance... QB 1 throws the ball 5 yards to his running back on a screen, who then takes it 30 yards to the house for a TD. QB 2 throws the ball 30 yards into the corner of the endzone where only his receiver can catch it, (and he does) for a TD. Both QB's would have the same 1-1 30yds 1TD stat line...but obviously one made a much more difficult throw. Same thing in reverse...QB 1 throws a good pass to an open receiver, that then goes through the receiver's hands, bounces off his helmet and ricochets into the hands of a defender for an INT. QB 2 tries to force a ball into double coverage and gets it picked. Both show up as an INT, but both are vastly different. So, again, I understand what they are trying to show. But, I don't know how you quantify some things like that.
