Is There A War On Police?

Featured Replies

If one officer is killed it's one too many.

Statistics mean nothing to the family and friends of an officer who has been killed.

With that said if the trend continues 2015 will be the 2nd-safest year for officers in decades.

Thoughts?

As with most anything, more media means more coverage. More coverage means more discussion. More discussion means were view things as being worse than they probably are. And we also forget or never know the statistics from the past. Was 1923 or 2015 worse for police? Most will say 2015, although 1923 was seven-times worse. However we always remember the good from the past and view the bad as present.

Just my opinion.

No.

The only reason more attention is being brought to officers killed in the line of duty is because LEO have been called out more for the bad apples in their group. Without that happening, we wouldn't be hearing any more than we normally do about officer deaths.

I think the way the cops have been murdered by people just coming up and sniping them isnt what used to be done in the past. Being killed in line of duty is one thing, Being shot at gas pump is another and calling 9-11 and setting up an ambush is another. And just coming up to a cop in a car and shooting him in the head is still not how many cops in previous yrs have been killed.

Yes there is a war on cops.

I wont call it a war, but it does seem like they are being targeted more commonly than before. What was it, like 8 police officers killed in 9 days? You can't tell me that they aren't being targeted more today than previously.

Your post is why I asked for thoughts. I think that most people take recent events and overstate them in relation to previous years.

However, stats do NOT show the brazen nature which some officers have died. That may be different even though the numbers are less than previous decades.

To contradict that, how do we know how many officers were killed in previous years that people would consider "ambush" situations? We don't.

Missed reading about the crime spree of Bonnie and Clyde did we?

living in the past are we.

Im talking NOW, not then. I know cops get killing in line of duty, wreck in chase, etc. Not just going up and shooting them at gas station, or stopped in front of building.

That's because we hear about it now. Plus the guy that ambushed the cop at a gas station is certifiably crazy isn't he? That's not a war. That's a mentally unstable person with a gun.

How do you know cops in the past haven't been killed in those ways?

I don't think there is a war on cops anymore than I think there is a war on blacks. I think both perceived wars are overstated by the media and in turn it is causing people to overstate their opinions and beliefs.

Could be the correct answer right there.

A little research will tell you that historically police officers have been targeted in virtually every era for different reason and by different groups. The same research will tell you that there have been police officers who have shamed their badges and their positions in virtually every era as well, for all the same reasons: money, race, ego, what-have-you. That we have instant world-wide notification of every incident of this type is the major difference. That and the politicizing of every event to the benefit of one group or another. Doesn't make it any less tragic or less disturbing, but this really isn't a new phenomenon. Also the fact that so many primary leadership figures take a spineless approach to dealing with the real issues involved has contributed to the perception that this is an epidemic.

I wont call it a war, but it does seem like they are being targeted more commonly than before. What was it, like 8 police officers killed in 9 days? You can't tell me that they aren't being targeted more today than previously.

This is kind of my thinking. And from talking to some former co-workers, police officers are certainly under the microscope and not always given the respect/credibility they have had in the recent past.
