I just did not see the traditional St. X toughness and intensity on offense. This is something that had gradually waned each year of the Wolford era. The problem is that it is a finesse offense without enough team speed to be a good finesse team. Just not what you traditionally expect from the Tigers.

 

The St. X defense played ok, not great. They did a good job of getting turnovers, but gave up a good bit of yardage. They gave up a few more big plays than they typically did last year both on the ground and through the air.

Racke through a 20 yard pass to Green for a td. Trent Kincaid had a interception for a score. Dillon Powell caught a 60 yard screen for a td and had good night running the ball. Dylan Hampton had a 10 yard. Proud of my Pioneers!!!! We believe!!!!

I would say the speed was about even. I would not rate the speed exceptional for either team. I am concerned about the speed that St. X will encounter with Male, Highlands, Trinity, Central, and Manual looming on their schedule.

The Pioneers did a good job executing on offense and playing sound on defense. There are major concerns for St. X. The new spread offense just does not fit the personnel. Too much "east and west" with limited speed. Not much movement from the o-line on interior runs. No real deep threat. Plus, with the new hurry-up tempo, it is possible to go 3 and out very quickly.

 

Additionally, the red zone woes of the past two years continue for St. X. Was in the red zone 4 times. Got held to a FG once, threw 1 red zone interception, got held on downs once due to negative plays, and fumbled once. I don't see the red zone issued getting much better with the finesse offense. Maybe cut out the turnovers, that's it. This offense is just not designed to be tough on short yardage and red zone.

 

It could have been a lot worse for St. X. Their only varsity TD was on a fluke play where they recovered their own fumble and ran about 50 yards for the score. SK could have easily had 2 more TD's.

 

I take it as a combination of a solid performance by SK and a poor showing by St. X.

Solid effort by SK O and D lines. Powell looks poised to have a strong season if he can stay healthy; fun to watch him run the ball once he gets some space.

 

BUT, this St. X team that they just beat in a game that doesn't count was not very good. Sure, they put a ton of kids on the sideline but they just didn't execute. Surprising to me although I don't know the personnel all that well.

If 27-10 is your definition of a spanking that is disconcerting.

 

Any time SK wins it is a spanking. Obviously. C'mon, Pep have some of this delicious kool-aid that's being passed around and then you'll see.

Seriously though, I can see four possibilities:

 

1. SK is up this year

2. St. X is down this year

3. A bit of both 1 and 2

4. It was only a scrimmage and St. X did not take it seriously.

 

Personally, I think it's number three, but I'm curious to see what other people's opinions are. Both teams' first game should help to determine just what this scrimmage means.

Trying to hand out crow for a scrimmage... :lol: Gotta love it.

Like if it the score wasn't the other way, everyone would be taking the high road.
