July 25, 201511 yr I grew up in a rough part of the west side of Covington and while running around getting high with even some kids that I really shouldn't have been running around with, I never once saw anyone with a gun or even heard people talking about having them. Sure, it's possible that some of the residents or store owners in the area had handguns or hunting rifles, but where the kids were concerned, and some very rough ones at that, it wasn't a concern. Very few times in my neighborhood did I ever hear of murders by gunshot, and I'm talking about a neighborhood where there were Hatfield and Mccoy type family fights on a regular basis requiring Covington's finest to make frequent daily stops. When I was about 18 a punk a few doors down shot and killed a girl who wouldn't put out, and was back on the streets bragging about it a year later just to eventually rape and thieve a barmaid a block away at closing time, and is thankfully now serving a life sentence. He used to sucker punch me as a kid just for kicks. I just used guns and heroin to compare them to my childhood preoccupation with booze and pot, and not saying that guns and heroin were necessarily related, but to show what risky stuff kids will become preoccupied with if it becomes a common thing on the streets were curiosity to partake just becomes the next step, and they get the impression that it's off limits to them, and they want to look cool to their piers. In my post I wasn't too worked up about law abiding citizens carrying if in fact they are mentally stable and responsible about it. Not sure how you considered that I was, but I was concerned with making sure that everyone granted the privilege was truly studied well enough to make sure, and my other concern was that with the topic becoming so common, and more guns circulating about that higher incidences of them getting into the wrong hands increases as well with the preoccupation increasing along with it. I don't know how to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, but because I don't know is no reason not to ponder how and perhaps execute ways to try. Ignoring it is not a solution. The more guns being made increases the chances of more guns getting in the wrong hands. We're obviously long beyond any chance of removing all guns from our culture because it has gotten so far out of hand that it's to the point of no return sadly. Idealistically I'd love to live in a world where they didn't exist, but I realize that that is completely impossible. I'd like to believe that legal responsible carriers and those who don't carry alike can still be on the same team in efforts to explore ways to do what can be done to avoid having guns get into the wrong hands. Yes indeed keeping them out of the hands of criminals is difficult for sure, but making sure they stay out of the hands of off kilter everyday people by having stiffer filtering background systems wouldn't be a bad idea. Too often it seems that the present background check system has failed us. It shouldn't be as easy as it is for Joe Schmo to get clearance. I know that you're a responsible dude and i've little doubt that the others out here who carry are as well. I get those defending their right to carry. I also defend your right to carry. What I haven't yet been able to comprehend from those who carry is their fuss or objection to those like me or Hellcats who feel that while we have these rights, that along with it we should do all that we can to ensure or at the least ponder and consider that we're making the best efforts possible at making it the safest that we can. Though all answers are not presently completely apparent, and no one is suggesting that one of them be taking away your rights, what's so wrong about seeing and admitting that while it's good that we have rights, there's also obvious elements of bad in our society that goes along with it, and trying to find ways to make it better? It's like you are inside my head.
July 25, 201511 yr It's like you are inside my head. Thank you, and that's a complete honor because I always consider you to be of sound mind and cool as can be to boot. :thumb:
July 25, 201511 yr Anyone who feels guns need to go in America has conceded the fact that we will never be able to fix our mental health issues, nor should we even try and that they're ok with dying due to other forms of violence, just not a gun.
July 25, 201511 yr Author Anyone who feels guns need to go in America has conceded the fact that we will never be able to fix our mental health issues, nor should we even try and that they're ok with dying due to other forms of violence, just not a gun. I agree 100%. It's not an all or nothing issue. A good portion of our nation accepts it as the consequence of being a citizen of the United States kind of like you might get hit with a foul ball at a baseball game. All lives won't be saved. All criminals will not be prohibited from getting guns, but some will. Some lives will be saved . If you have to wait an extra day or prove your capability with a weapon more than just a computer test or do without a weapon that really has zero practical use other than killing that would be worth saving lives. I think those would be sacrifices we could make for the off chance that a weapon may not fall into a dangerous person's hands. For the record: I like my chances against a knife, bat, axe, broken-beer bottle, or anything else than a gun when a lunatic attacks a school, movie theater, church, or wherever he feels he can get his racist/terroristic agenda across.

Yes, and my 16 year old can obtain a case of beer too, but I don't want it to be lawful. 2. You can't legally own a bazooka, a tank, an f16, a nuke...You can't have everything you want. Actually some collectors already have these and while F16's haven't been released for personal ownership yet other older planes have been.
July 25, 201511 yr Author Actually some collectors already have these and while F16's haven't been released for personal ownership yet other older planes have been. Awesome  Can they be armed?
July 25, 201511 yr Awesome  Can they be armed? Yes with the right permit, they can be. I think it is a destructive device permit.
July 25, 201511 yr Awesome  Can they be armed? You can own a lot of weapons if you have the money for the permit. Weapons are very restricted in the country. The anti gun crowd sometimes don't even realize how many gun laws are on the books already. You keep saying assault weapons should be banned , what you are referring to are semi auto rifles. Earlier you didn't respond to when I said by a large main most murders in the country are by hand guns. So why attack the semi auto weapon when the hand gun does more damage ?

Well there you have it, can't argue my point so immediately begin with the hyperbole.
July 25, 201511 yr Author You guys ok with that: money, a permit , and more qualifications for the ability to obtain a weapon? Easier target. Assault weapons with large magazines can cause more damage to a large group. There is no practical use for them other than killing humans.

That site needs to get better maps and graphs I got bored midway through. We're even with bias crap sites then. :isurrender: God bless them. I hope they never have to fire or brandish their weapon. I am happy they live in a country where they as law-abiding trained citizens can pass thorough background checks and carry a weapon that makes them feel safer. If you read in any of my posts that said take this right away then you may want to review or I need to provide some more explanation.

Well there you have it, can't argue my point so immediately begin with the hyperbole. 1. What? You said people who should have guns can get them like it happens so we shouldn't do anything about it. 30,000 people a year dead to gun violence 100,000 injured a year to gun violence Sorry that worries me. 2. Why do people need assault weapons that are semiautomatic and carry large magazines? Sorry I'll stay on point.
July 25, 201511 yr @B-Ball-fan. As I said, when I was a kid, guns were very much around. Heck, kids had guns on racks in their pickup trucks at school and I lived in Newport. Guns haven't changed a lot since then, but people did. Why then are some people railing against the guns instead of railing against the way kids are raised today and the parent's little helper, psychotropic drugs? That's the bigest changes I've seen since I was a kid. Why go after guns? They aren't the problem. You don't know how to keep guns out of people's hands because you can't. Think prohibition. How'd that turn out? You want to tell me how to know when someone is going to go off kilter? I wish we could, but you can't normally tell when someone is mentally ill. Sometimes you can and sure, I'm all for keeping guns away from people like that. Problem is, we have an anti-gun crowd with the mindset that wants all guns off the street and God forbid they get their hand in determining how to go about finding who is ill and who isn't. Again, the treatment for some of these people seem to cause more problems than doing them any good. Yet we keep throwing psychotropic drugs down their gullets. You want to know why we have a problem with what's being asked. I'll spell it out for you. It isn't you or Hellcats that worry us, it's the anti-gun leftist politicians and their blind minions that do want to take our rights away, all the while telling us they don't want to do that as they wink and nod. They are the most disingenuous crowd of liars that use every trick, misinformation and fear tactics available to them to trick the populous into yielding and bowing to their agenda. It's as simple as that.
July 25, 201511 yr FWIW... If it has worked for them it might at least be worth looking into. Here?s the deal with the Australian gun control law that Obama is talking about - The Washington Post
