I consider "rules" things I just do even if I don't have a great practical or logical reason for it. A few off the top of my head:

 

I always finish my drink.

 

I never wear shorts unless I'm going to workout or swim.

 

I never switch a record/CD/song until it's finished.

 

I never wear a tie without a jacket.

 

I always finish a book/movie/project once I start it.

I never wear black.

 

I only call someone or answer the phone if there are no alternatives.

Always hold the door for someone else when possible, especially if there is a really hot girl around that may notice you waiting a long time just to be polite.

 

It's ok to talk to the deer on the side of the road, but it's not ok if they talk back.

 

Whenever you're forced to deal with a rude or irrational person try to be as nice as possible. This will typically cure alot of their ailments.

 

When not driving or operating a vehicle always sit on the right hand side even on a bus.

 

Never pass on an opportunity to go to the restroom.

When I had a protracted hospital stay a year and a half ago, there was a patient, probably bipolar, most decidedly mentally ill in any event. Was at the nurses' station by 5:00 AM. Wouldn't leave the staff alone. Obviously interfering with their duties. Not really belligerent, just manicky.

 

I asked one of the nurses if it would be okay for him to spend some time in my room (it was a private room). They told me something along the lines of, "You don't have to, that's okay". I told them that they had treated me very well for several days, and that this was a small way for me to reciprocate. I told them that I had spent my entire career at a mental health center, and that while I was by no means a therapist, I felt equipped to deal with him.

 

Spent 3 or 4 hours chatting with him that morning, a couple more at lunch and a couple more that evening. Same the next day. No telling how many thanks the staff gave me - verbal and non-verbal - for the "assistance".

 

I guess that's a roundabout way of saying "do unto others". While I often fall short, I try.

Always bet on black.

Never pay full price for late pizza.

Always check "likes received" before you check anything else when getting on BGP.
