Had the catcher possessed the ball and then lost it after the tag it would have been the correct call.

July 3, 201511 yr I read in another article that he was called out for interference. That's correct. Blue obviously missed the call because he didn't see the ball come loose before the tag but that's what he THOUGHT he saw.
July 4, 201511 yr What amazes me on the call in the minor league game and the call in the Detroit game is that in neither case, did the umpire ask for help. When the reaction is that animated, why wouldn't you call the other umps together and just ask, "did I blatantly miss something here?". If they did, in the minor league game, all three other umps would have said "yes" immediately. In the Detroit game, the home plate ump surely had to see how far the guy's foot was off first base. Why not ask? Or if you are another umpire and you see the other guy has blatantly missed it, why not go up to him and ask if he is sure and that you saw it differently? Luckily, instant replay has cured stuff like this from happening any more.

July 4, 201511 yr In watching this again I am convinced the umpire saw the all come loose. However, I think he mistakenly thinks it came loose as a result of the runner slapping the glove.
