I'm not sure what all goes into making certain classes required or not, but it certainly seems sensible to me to allow students more choices.

I took Spanish in both high school and college, and while I'm not fluent, I could read a book completely in Spanish and give you a book report (in English) that would be decent enough. I understand it WAY better than I speak it, but I could speak it well enough to spend a week in Juarez and survive.

High school is too late. A language needs to start being taught in pre-school while a child's mind is still developing. It took me immersion to learn anything in Spanish and that was with a minor at a really good college.

Two years of German in high school (Ich spreche Deutsch für spaß jetzt.) Took a Spanish class in college (twice) and remember very little.

 

I want to start learning again as in my career knowing a second language would be huge.

I agree with the benefits of studying a foreign language. But I am still not convinced that it is necessary requirement for high school students. I would prefer that students are given a choice of whether or not they want to study a foreign language in high school. But the swap would have to be for an equally challenging class, like another science, math, history/social studies or English/Writing.

Same reason they have kids solve for X, learn history, take an art credit... We want kids to be able to think critically, and be challenged. It's not like there is that much content, outside of reading and written expression, that we use on a daily basis.

 

High schoolers already get that with a multitude of classes, why add to it with something a vast majority will NEVER use again.

At least a foreign language, especially Spanish can be somewhat useful in everyday life. It can help you get around in one of our nearby countries, or communicate with people we may encounter. It's helped me coach a kid who was learning English, and communicate with people in my many years of retail. I've never needed to use the derivative to find a tangent line or balanced a chemical equation in my adult working life. I think spanish is extremely valuable for those in any service industry, as you will likely encounter someone who speaks Spanish at least a few times. So while the majority may never use it, there are certainly many more opportunities TO use it than some other classes we would consider useless.

Foreign Language is getting more and more necessary in the business world and can actually be the tie breaker for many positions. I'd say knowing Spanish, German, or Chinese is way more important to 99% of kids than being able to find the obtuse angle of a parallelogram.

I am afraid that you are missing the point. Solving for x is something that many people do without knowing they are actually doing it.
