I keep seeing people stating how important learning a language us in today's global marketplace , and I agree. That isn't the issue.

 

The issue is how poorly it is taught and how in most school districts it starts way to late. .

 

I'm all for making learning a foreign language a requirement but we need to scrap how it is currently taught.

For a student to learn a language so that it will be useful to them in their career and life, they need to begin really learning it in elementary school, similarly to how someone learns to read and write and do math. It should be infused in their daily learning like a building block approach so that it becomes habit.

For 6 years my wife taught preschool where 90% of her kids spoke Spanish as a first language. She worked to teach them English as a second language. It is amazing how quickly her kids picked up the language so quickly. Most of them spoke it fluently by the 1st grade. I took 3 years of French in high school and remember 4 sentences.

Exactly, this is why if we are going to continue with it in high school it needs to be scrapped, because it does the overwhelming majority ZERO good to take 2-years of it, when they could be taking more Personal Finance, Family and Consumer Science, Economics........subjects that will REALLY BE USEFUL to them as adults.

Totally agree. I took Spanish 3 years in hs and 2 semesters in college. I can't even count to 10.

Those classes are available in many, if not just about all schools. In addition, I agree that finance classes especially, are important. However, as parents, we can play a very large, and more important role in our children's financial success than any 1 or two semester class. Too many people (not saying you specifically LB..just speaking in general terms) expect the school system to teach our kids everything, and don't take opportunities to teach their kids everyday.

Because English is the #1 language for worldwide business.....not Spanish, French, etc.....

You are correct, get rid of Foreign language class and give them two more years of Personal Finance, Family and Consumer Science, Economics..
