I'm not totally sure about libraries. Some libraries seem to be thriving. I live just down the street from the Nelson Co. PL and the parking lot there is jammed all the time, even on Sundays. Even after hours you can typically find as many as a half-dozen vehicles there watching movies using the wi-fi. Other branches in the county stay pretty busy as well. My hometown library is always packed with people whenever I'm there.

 

Not the most scientific of surveys, but it's what I've seen at places I'm familiar with.

 

Libraries still do all sorts of stuff. I use my e-reader to read magazines and books checked out for free using the Louisville Free Public Library's digital collections that they acquire. I use the library constantly and don't see it going anywhere.

I don't know — seems like in the case of financial advisers that with the ease of online trading, a lot of people would get in over their heads and seek expert opinion to bail them out of their gambling debts.

This morning I was thinking about the fortunate fact that the internet has not replaced physical books. I like that. I'm glad there is a phenomenal amount of literature and information not on the internet, materials we still have to physically pick up and read.

 

The internet has rendered the evening news obsolete for me.

I hope you're right, the library is one of my favorite places. Just seems like the reasons people used visit them are going away due to the internet.

I think vibrant library systems have managed to do a good job finding their niches while being versatile enough to offer a wide variety of programs to help keep folks and their kids coming in the doors.

 

Don't underestimate the free wi-fi and computer access as a drawing card for those who can't afford them.

I was thinking more of the long-established practice of paying for financial advice through high commissions at Merrill Lynch et al. Now one can read for free a multitude of quality financial analysis at sites such as seekingalpha.com, then execute the trade for $7.99 at an online discount brokerage.

If only that were true for everyone. I stand in line at the post office at least twice every week. My fax machine won't stop humming. I use enough paper to kill off a forest each and every week.

I guess that and the fact that they are using the internet as mentioned above can keep them going. I know I used to make a day of a library visit on a regular basis and the library would be wall to wall on a Saturday. Now the crowd is noticeably thinner. On the other hand my wife now downloads tons of books and videos where she used to never visit the building. I guess that is more than compensating.
