They really can't afford Cueto long term while letting Leake leave. They can't let both leave. So is the only solution now to sign Leake and trade Cueto?
May 7, 201511 yr Money is forcing the Reds to trade Cueto. It has nothing to do with Leake's performance. He will never be a true #1 . He is maybe becoming a very good #2 but let's see a full year out of him before anointing him as such.
May 7, 201511 yr Leake is pitching himself out of their price range. It will end with both he and Cueto gone by the deadline. The correct move would have been signing Leake long term before last season, and getting him for 5 years at 40-50 million. He would have provided a long term inning eater at a reasonable price. Instead they gave the money to Bailey with the hope he would magically develop into an ace, which was never going to happen even before his arm exploded. They refuse to think like the mid market team they are, and continue to make bad financial decisions that will cripple the franchise long term. They wanted to play the 100 million deal game, and are now screwed long term...
May 7, 201511 yr Reds rank 19th in MLB in amount spent on Pitching at $34.7M (18th $29M 2 years ago) 9th in Infield spending at $35.1 (8th at $31.9) 12th in Outfield spending at $21.8 (12th at $17.2) 17th in Dead Spending at $3.8 (24th at $1.3) 14th in overall payroll at $120.5 (13th at $103.9) Payroll wise the Reds are pretty much exactly where they were two years ago at this point.

Doesn't matter if Leake is on the team at that point. Once Cueto is gone this team will take a few years to rebuild and get back to contending

I would like to think they pattern it afte the Lester one. Give him a huge signing bonus which will save you payroll in the future. I don't think the Reds could afford a 30 million dollar signing bonus though
