What do you do with Jay Bruce?

Featured Replies

Right now, having never shagged a fly ball, he's better than Dante' Bichette, and even with the donkey.

Which means he's not a serviceable ML outfielder.

UKMF ... I see Mesoraco as a pretty athletic catcher. He seems to run well. The Reds need his bat. First preference is clearly to have him back behind the plate. But if he can't catch I would definitely give left field a try. It has been done before and Meso has enough speed to do it I think. I was a little surprised you replied back with this guy :lol2: when I first got the idea out there. I consider you a knowledgeable baseball guy.

The bolded is why I replied that way.

I expect that kind of idea from some on here. You aren't one of them.

You don't think that's doable? If he is not going to be able to catch, I try that before putting up him on the shelf for the season

Well since we're "thinking outside the box" why not put Meso at 1st and Joey in the OF? :lol2:

Right back at you with that comment.

There have been more than a few catchers that converted to other positions.

I think if Meso can't catch then the Reds should take a serious look at him in the outfield

Unfortunately, the Reds have been down that road so we know the answer to that one.

Agreed. I have said for a couple of years now that Bruce needs to quit being so stubborn and work with a hitting coach to drive the ball to left center field. If he refuses, he can refuse while batting 6th for Louisville.

IMO, his stubborness is one of his problems. I think it's also a macho thing with him, refusing to use the shifts to his favor. I also think, like when the toothpick was here, either the inmates are running things or the the front office. This manager sure doesn't seem to be. If Bruce WOULD EVER decide to go to left field, it's going to take a little work and time and he has to LISTEN to what is being said to him by a hitting instructor.

He'll never be sent to Louisville, or removed from the lineup very long because of his salary. He certainly needs a wake-up call or attitude adjustment. Hell, if I struck out that much I'd be taking it out on objects in the damn dugout. I think his attitude is "I'm a major leaguer. I did everything I needed to do to get here. Why do I need to change now?"

Honestly, I think things need a shakeup. Do you blow this team up? Maybe. But something has to be done. I'd rather watch a bunch of minor leaguers busting their rears every day than watching what is going on with this current team now. I know it will NEVER happen but if I was King of major league baseball, no one gets more than a one year contract. I wouldn't care if you hit 100 home runs a year while walking on water.

Why the big push for Meso in the OF? If he's not catching, hes not very good any where else. .242 lifetime hitter with that number bumped by a big start last season that lasted what a month?

I think some of you are giving Bruce too much credit. Frankly, he's just not that skilled.

And I don't necessarily disagree. Just don't see it as a feasible mid-season move. Do it over the winter/spring if you're going to do it.

Dude can't even lay down a bunt with no one on the left side of the infield.

Fact. I wish they'd pan to the opposing coach when he muffs one of those attempts. He has to be chuckling.

To be fair, neither can anyone else on the team (save Hamilton).

Bruce has stopped hitting the ball to the opposite field. 2 years ago he was hitting a bunch that way, now he can't even pull the dang thing.

If he doesn't hit one of his hot stretches in the next month I'll be really concerned

A month from now this team will be 14 games out and fighting with the Brew Crew to stay out of the basement.
